10 Dark Bertholdt Hoover Facts That AOT Fans Rarely Know
Check out some of the dark and surprising facts about Bertholdt Hoover that fans rarely know!
Anime & Manga | 09 July
Attack on Titan has many great antagonists, one of which is Bertholdt Hoover. Bertholdt is the first antagonist introduced as the heir to the Colossal Titan, one of the Survey Corps' greatest threats early in the series. Although the Survey Corps are initially ignorant of the Colossal Titan's identity, they eventually learn that he is one of their own soldiers, whom they fight repeatedly throughout the series before finally killing him. Bertholdt is more brainwashed than evil, but he still does the bad things that make him such a great villain.
Let's take a look at some of Bertholdt Hoover's facts which are quite surprising and somewhat dark in the article below.
1. Destroyed a Country for Marley
As Eldian in Marley, Bertholdt's best chance for a better life is to become a Warrior. Marley trains children to become Titan Shifters to fight their enemies and Bertholdt is given the Colossal Titan. The other children who inherited one of the Nine Titans are Reiner, Annie, Pieck, Zeke, and Marcel.
The six men are sent to a country hostile to Marley to destroy it to determine if they have the resolve to kill the people of Paradis. Thanks to his explosive transformation, Bertholdt caused the greatest damage to Marley's enemy country.
2. Assists His Colleagues Only When Ordered
Bertholdt has always been more of a follower than a leader, as he usually only listens to Reiner's orders rather than making his own decisions. As a result, Bertholdt became a mindless foe to the Survey Corps throughout most of their battle, but also would not help his allies unless ordered to do so.
He could have helped Reiner and Annie kill Marco when he learned of their identities but chose to remain silent because he had not been ordered to help. Despite caring about Annie, Bertholdt also stays out of the conflict between Zeke and Reiner as they consider saving her before going against the Survey Corps.
3. Breached Into Shiganshina
Bertholdt is the first antagonist introduced when the series begins. The people in Shiganshina were terrified when they saw the Titan that was taller than their walls. After he kicked a hole in the wall, letting both normal and abnormal Titans in, they did whatever they had to do to survive.
Many people died because of Bertholdt's actions, and the lives of others were shattered as they lost their loved ones and their homes. Bertholdt, along with Reiner and Annie, then pretended to be ordinary citizens, getting food and shelter right next to their victims.
4. Manipulating His Friends in the 104th Cadet Corps
The Warriors hoped that after they invaded Paradis, the Founding Titan would fight them. However, their plan was not successful. In their second attempt to discover the Founding Titan's identity and bring the man to Marley, they decide to join the military.
Bertholdt befriends several soldiers in the 104th Cadet Corps, but that doesn't stop him or the other Warriors from continuing their missions. Bertholdt deceived his friends for years, making them think he was on their side when he was actually plotting to kill them all.
5. Brings the Titans to Trost
-
After graduating from the 104th Cadet Corps, Bertholdt invaded the Trost District. Similar to what happened at Shiganshina, many people died, including some of Bertholdt's comrades from Paradis. Others have lost everything and everyone they love.
After he kicked another hole in the wall and allowed both normal and abnormal Titans into Trost, Bertholdt pretended to care about his duties as a soldier by fighting alongside his friends, while actually not caring what would happen to them.

6. Kidnap Ymir and Eren with Reiner
When the Survey Corps begins to suspect Reiner and Bertholdt of being the Armored and Colossal Titans, Reiner admits to them the truth. Eren and Reiner start fighting while Bertholdt forces everyone to stay away.
After he captured Ymir, heir to the Jaw Titan, he helped Reiner take Eren away from the Survey Corps. As Ymir understands what Reiner and Bertholdt are going through because he too has lived in Marley, Eren feels completely betrayed by his friends. The Survey Corps finally caught up with the Warriors and saved Eren.
7. Fight for Marley
After his friends from Paradis learn the truth about him, Bertholdt tries to tell them that no matter who he really is, he cares about them. However, if he really meant those things, he could tell them the truth about the world and how Marley sent him and the other Warriors to kill them.
After all, Marley had brainwashed him into thinking that Eldian was a devil. Rather than accept that they weren't demons after living in Paradis, he decided to continue fighting for the country that abused him. Even if it meant betraying his country and likely hurting his family, if Bertholdt switched sides and started fighting for the Survey Corps, he could become a hero.
8. Refusing to Seek Peaceful Solutions with Armin
Bertholdt's friends tried to talk to him several times after they found out he was the Colossal Titan. When they all fought in Shiganshina, Armin hoped to resolve their conflict peacefully.
However, instead of talking and coming up with a solution, Bertholdt decided that he would kill everyone in Paradis and bring Eren to Marley or die trying. Armin, along with other old friends of Bertholdt's, are shocked that Bertholdt has lowered himself to the point where he won't even talk to him, which could end the fight.
9. Killed Many Survey Corps Members
In the midst of the battle between the warriors and the soldiers, Bertholdt turned into a Titan getting close enough to his enemies that many of them died instantly. While Zeke had killed many Survey Corps members by throwing stones at them, Bertholdt had killed many others by his own hands.
Dozens of warriors went to Shiganshina in hopes that they would be able to save the island, but only nine of them survived. However, this was also the last battle that Bertholdt participated in.
10. Almost Killed Armin
Armin hatches a plot that will result in Bertholdt's death. While Armin distracts the Colossal Titan heir, who burns him badly, Eren approaches from behind and rips Bertholdt out of his Colossal Titan.
Armin almost dies from Bertholdt's attack, but Levi saves his life by injecting the titan serum and feeding Bertholdt to him. Despite every effort Bertholdt tries for Marley, he ends up helping the Survey Corps when Armin gets all of his powers.
