Many people who follow the Fairy Tail series may feel confused whether Natsu Dragneel or Lucy Heartfilia are the main characters of this story. Because Lucy is told more than Natsu. Lucy spent her childhood admiring the Fairy Tail guild as an inexperienced Celestial Mage, then one day suddenly she was invited to join the guild. It should have been the happiest moment in Lucy's life. But then she realized that the guild was only filled with drunks, people who didn't know about their own power, and idiots who liked to fight each other every night.

Still, within the guild it wasn't all bad. Lucy manages to find her second home with comfort she couldn't get before, even from her own family. Fairy Tail has even helped Lucy reach her full potential as a Mage, through battles with some of the strongest people on the planet. Want to know more unique facts about this sweet and energetic Lucy Heartfilia character? Let's join the discussion about Lucy!

1. Her Name was Inspired by The Beatles’s Song

Although Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima originally thought of this character's name while listening to The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", there must have been other origins for the name Lucy Heartfilia in the series. Lucy's parents both worked in the merchant guild "Love & Lucky" when Lucy's mother, Layla, became pregnant. The sign on the guild was actually missing the letter "K," but they still liked the look of the word "Lucky" without the letter "K," so they finally agreed to name their child Lucy.

This naming is actually quite fitting, as Lucy Heartfilia grew up quite lucky in her own right, and was even referred to by her father as "Lucky Lucy" growing up. Lucy's father, Jude, is also taken from The Beatles' song "Hey, Jude".

2. Her Original Character Was Designed to Use Card Magic

A character often undergoes various different changes before manifesting in its final appearance. The initial designs of the main characters of Hiro Mashima's Fairy Tail were very different before Hiro decided on what we know as the final appearances of the main characters. Erza Scarlet was originally more like a wild child from the Amazons, while Natsu Dragneel was originally designed to have horns.

Lucy Heartfilia looks pretty much the same as the final version but in the beginning she was a Mage who uses cards and is not a key like the Lucy we know today. Mashima eventually changed this idea, mainly because the cards were overused by the other anime's main characters. Even so, Mashima still creates a character who uses cards, Cana Alberona who likes liquor, which is also introduced in this Fairy Tail series.

3. She Wanted to be a Writer

While most Fairy Tail members don't talk much about what they want to do when they're not on missions, Lucy Heartfilia is a little different. She has goals and desires that are not the same as her friends. She has always wanted to be a writer and keep a journal that chronicles the adventures of herself and the other Fairy Tail members as they travel.

Eventually, Lucy's intention was to turn her journal into a novel and publish it. Her clear desire is to become a world famous writer.

4. Met Her Future Self

The future version of Lucy Heartfilia goes back in time and saves the younger Lucy. During the second half of the Grand Magic Games, Lucy is visited by a version of herself from a ruined future.

In this timeline, the gates of Eclipse open and allow a number of dragons to enter the present, destroying it with their overwhelming power. The future Lucy tries to go back in time to help Fairy Tail deal with the dragon but ends up dying while trying to protect her past version of Lucy from the future version of Rogue.

5. Summon 3 Celestial Spirits at Once

Celestial Mages have a number of specific limits to their power, based on the contract agreed upon by the Mage and the Celestial Spirits themselves. These rules can be anything, even any day of the week for the power to work. The most important thing was the ability to have enough magic power to summon that Celestial Spirit.

Most Celestial Mages only had enough magic power to summon one Spirit, and some Celestial Mages had enough magic power to summon two Spirits. Lucy Heartfilia is strong enough to summon three Spirits, which puts Lucy in the ranks of the elite class of Celestial Mages, which is why Lucy can summon the Celestial Spirit King too, even just once.

6. Saved a Younger Version of Herself

In the OVA known as "Memory Days" Natsu, Gray, Lucy, and Erza are cleaning Fairy Tail's storage room but they are transported back in time by a mysterious magical book. They all wake up in the past and finally meet their past selves too in a hilarious way.

However, in the case of Lucy Heartfilia, she ends up saving a train that went out of control from a crash. When she meets the person on board, Lucy is surprised to find out that the person in the carriage is her younger self.

7. Her Relationship with Her Father is not Harmonious

Lucy Heartfilia's mother, Layla, died when Lucy was a child, as a result of her efforts to try to open the gates of Eclipse. After this happens, Lucy is raised by her father Jude, who devotes all his time to working for his company and leaves his daughter alone. He even once hired the Dark Guild Phantom Lord to kidnap Lucy and persuade her to marry a duke, in order to increase the wealth of the Heartfilia family.

Lucy and her father finally try to fix their relationship, but it never turns out to be exactly the way it was when Layla was alive. Lucy also became very sad when her father died after Lucy left the real world for seven years because of the events that occurred on Tenrou Island.

8. A Descendant of the Celestial Mage Family

The Mages in this series discover their own magical powers in very different ways. Some people are taught magic like Natsu and Gray, while other Magicians like Erza, are born with their magical talents. Meanwhile, some people seem to have their magic power in generations. As happened to Lucy Heartfilia, her mother, Layla, is also a Celestial Mage who has a special relationship with the Spirit she summons.

However, in the Fairy Tail series, it turns out that the descendants of the Celestial Mage family are not just Layla and Lucy. In fact, 400 years ago, the Heartfilia family had always been a Celestial Mage. This was very important, because their existence was also meant to be the guardian of the Eclipse Gate, the gate to time through which only Celestial Mages could open.

9. Can Activate Celestial Spirit Power Into Herself

After repeatedly engaging in close combat, Lucy Heartfilia has finally developed a way to make herself more useful in combat. Instead of simply summoning the Celestial Spirit, Lucy has developed a way to imbue herself with some of the Celestial Spirit's magical powers, allowing her to fight in a way similar to Erza's magic.

Known as the "Star Dress", by performing this magic Lucy is able to use the costume of that power and perform some magic from her Celestial Spirit abilities. Later, this magic could evolve into a high-level version known as Star Dress Mix, which could combine the powers of two different Celestial Spirits into one powerful force.

10. Urano Metria as Her Main Spell

As Mages, Fairy Tail members spend much of their time casting spells that are more effective in physical combat or providing their weapons with energy to make them stronger in attacking things.

Lucy's best magic spell is Urano Metria, which is a spell downloaded to her brain to help her defeat Sorano from Oracion Seis. The spell can surround its opponent with a star-like light that can explode at once. This magic was an ability that Lucy had only used a few times, as she barely had enough magic power to activate it unaided.
