Bulma is one of the characters that appear from the first season of Dragon Ball. There are some interesting facts and unique trivia about Bulma from Dragon Ball that you probably didn’t know about.

So, what are the fascinating facts about this character? Without further ado, let’s get into it!

1. Based on a Character from Journey to the West, Named Xuanzang

Most Dragon Ball fans may already be aware that the anime took inspiration from Journey to the West. The story in Dragon Ball begins with a monkey boy who embarks on a journey with a monk-like teacher and a talking pig to summon a mystical dragon who grants wishes.

As a matter of fact, some of the characters in Dragon Ball are inspired by Journey to the West. Bulma is a character who’s inspired by Xuanzang, a guide in the search for the dragon balls.

2. Married to Vegeta

Most fans might think that Bulma will end up marrying Goku. However, she found her soulmate – Vegeta. Bulma was once briefly involved in a relationship with Yamcha, yet it didn’t work as he couldn’t commit to Bulma.

3. Originally Planned to Have a Romantic Relationship with Goku

When Akira Toriyama first began working on Dragon Ball, the editor planned to pair Goku with Bulma as a romantic couple. However, after several episodes, the idea began to seemed rather odd given that Bulma was 16 whereas Goku was 12.

Since Goku has no knowledge of the world and the age gap between them, Bulma became more of a surrogate mother for Goku.

4. Has Helped Vegeta Achieve His Full Potential

Before Goku became the first Super Saiyan, the Z Fighters had their understandings of the transformation based on legends. They thought that to gain such power, one needs a pure heart. Yet Vegeta proved otherwise when he attained that transformation.

Another thing that Vegeta learned is that relying on someone doesn’t make him weak, instead, his marriage with Bulma actually makes him the strongest Z Fighter.

One of the examples is in Dragon Ball GT when Bulma helped Vegeta become a Super Saiyan 4 with the Blutz Wave Generator. In the newly-acquired form, Vegeta was able to fuse with Super Saiyan 4 Goku and become Gogeta, the most powerful character in the series.

In Battle of Gods, Vegeta realized that he couldn’t go up against Beerus given that even the Super Saiyan 3 Goku couldn’t face the God of Destruction. But when Beerus slapped Bulma, Vegeta’s rage seeing his wife being attacked was so overwhelming that it gave him an insurmountable power.

5. Planned to Use the Dragon Balls to Get Strawberries

At the beginning of the series, Bulma was quite young, so it’s understandable that her Dragon Ball wishes aren’t the most meaningful. When she first started searching for the Dragon Balls, she desired to make a wish of a lifetime supply of strawberries, her favorite food.

Her desire constantly changed as the series went on, and she later decided to wish for a perfect soulmate – and she ended up marrying Vegeta.

6. Used the Dragon Balls to Look Younger

Bulma’s intelligence often exceeds her beauty, which some of her friends don’t seem to notice. Although she’s a quite realistic and sensible individual, Bulma is obsessed with her appearance, and she makes it her priority. In some episodes, she mentions the amount of time she spends on her beauty routine. At some point, her motivation of finding the Dragon Balls can be quite selfish.

In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, she has 6 Dragon Balls and manages to use them to look five years younger.

7. Often Becomes the Victim of Mind Control

Despite her exceptional intelligence, Bulma often falls victim to mind-controlling villains in the anime. She was once turned into a mindless killing machine by Garlic Jr. and Black Water Mist.

Aside from that, Captain Ginyu also once possessed her body, and the latest is when Baby takes over Bulma’s mind in the Baby Saga.

8. The Most Intelligent Character in the Series

Granted, Bulma has no special skills when it comes to combats, but she can overcome this shortcoming with her ingenuity. In this series, Bulma’s discoveries often become the key to solving the problems, and sometimes can be used directly to defeat the villains.

Bulma’s first displayed her brilliance when she was just 5 years old, by fixing Jaco’s spaceship on Omori Island.

9. She Created a Time Machine

In the Future Trunks Saga, a mysterious capsule appears with Future Trunks in it. When Bulma finds a note from her future self, everything becomes clear that a capsule is a time machine that Bulma created in the future.

Evidently, Bulma managed to give her past self clear instructions to create the fuel and a new, functioning time machine.

10. Was Turned into Food on Multiple Occasions

When Monster Carrot was the biggest and most dangerous villain in the Dragon Ball series, he possessed a powerful ability that allowed him to turn anyone into a carrot. He used this power on Bulma, but Goku eventually managed to save her before she was fed to rabbits.

Aside from that Bulma was once turned into chocolate by Majin Buu as he also had the power to turn anyone into food.

11. She Smokes

You may not be aware of it, but there are several scenes where Bulma smokes a cigarette in Dragon Ball Z. However, her bad habit of smoking is rarely shown, thus not so many fans are aware that she’s actually a smoker.

12. Bulma and Her Family Are Named After Underwear

Akira Toriyama has been known for his unique ways of naming his characters in Dragon Ball, for example, the Saiyans were named after vegetables – such as Raditz (radish) and Broly (broccoli).

There’s also King Piccolo, who’s named after a musical instrument, and everyone in Frieza’s family was named after everything cold.

However, Bulma perhaps has the lamest naming scheme of all as everyone in her family is named after underwear.

Bulma can also be interpreted as bloomers underpants, she named her son Trunks, and her daughter's name Bulla means bra.

13. Has a Sister

When Bulma first contacted her sister in Dragon Ball Super, most fans were confused as they had never seen nor heard of Bulma having a sister before. Bulma’s older sister, Tights was first introduced in Dragon Ball Super.

Previously, Akira Toriyama has also worked on other projects aside from Dragon Ball, one of which was Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. In the short series, Tights is one of the main characters.

14. She’s the One Who’s (Indirectly) Responsible for Unleashing Cell and Omega Shenron

We already know that Bulma is an amazing inventor. Her work at Capsule Corp has resulted in many technological advances, such as cars and aircraft that can be carried in pockets. Two of the biggest impacts she had were the Dragon Ball radar and Trunks’ time machine. Both inventions are highly useful as no character can sense the Dragon Balls or travel through time, but both items also helped unleash two of the most powerful villains in the series.

Instead of building a spaceship for Future Trunks to travel to Namek and use the Dragon Balls to stop the androids, Future Bulma built a time machine. Whereas the time machine saved Goku and allowed Future Trunks to gain power, Cell managed to steal it in one of the timelines and went to the main timeline to absorb the androids. So, Bulma unintentionally gave Cell a means to become one of the biggest threats the Z Fighters have ever dealt with.

And, despite the usefulness of the Dragon Ball radar, the overuse of the Dragon Balls in Dragon Ball GT caused negative energy to collect in them and manifest the evil dragons. The reckless use of the Dragon Balls resulted in Omega Shenron nearly annihilating the Earth. Bulma deserves all the credits for helping the Z Fighters, but she’s also indirectly responsible for unleashing two of the most powerful villains.

15. Was Once Killed by “Goku”

In Episode 47 of Dragon Ball Super, Future Bulma gets killed in a tragic incident. Future Trunks witnesses that Future Bulma gets blown up by Goku Black – who’s actually an alternate incarnation of Zamasu.
