Duration is indeed one of the considered focused things in the film industry. Some directors admit that it takes various elements to be able to create a film with the right duration in the sense that it is not long but not short as well.

It doesn’t only apply to non-horror films, it turns out that horror film directors also often think about the same thing. Fortunately, there are some filmmakers who dare to go out of their comfort zone to create a horror film with a slightly longer duration than others.

By using a longer duration than usual, these filmmakers managed to incorporate various interesting elements into the film. What are horror films that have the longest duration? Let’s check them out!

1. Sssshhh... (163 Minutes)

India is not famous for its horror movies, but there is one horror movie from India that has slasher genre that can entertain those who like long duration movies. The Indian slasher film Sssshhh… has a duration of about 163 minutes.

This film was released in 2003 which told us about a crazy serial killer who creates havoc around Indian college campuses by killing the victim one by one.

The movie was inspired by the classic Scream by Wes Craven. Even so, the execution in this film is quite sweet so that the film has its own quality and identity.

2. It Chapter 2 (170 Minutes)

Inspired by Stephen King’s works, Andy Muschietti as the director managed to work on the film ‘It’ in 2017. This film managed to become an unexpected horror movie because it broke many kinds of records at the box office. Just like its 1990 made-for-TV predecessor, this movie is divided into two parts.

The reason is that the novel is quite long so that if it is made into a movie, it cannot be made into just one movie. In chapter 2, Muschietti even made this film with a very, very long duration as many 170 minutes.

3. Kwaidan (183 Minutes)

The second anthology movie that has a long duration is Kwaidan by director Masaki Kobayashi. The movie deals with four different stories based on various stories taken from “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things” by writer Lafcadio Hearn.

Unlike many modern horror anthologies which usually have a thread of interconnected stories, in this movie, the stories are completely unrelated. Even so, this movie is unique so it is worth watching even though the duration is quite long.

4. 4bia (240 Minutes)

4bia is a Thai horror anthology film that has a fairly long duration of up to 240 minutes. The lengthy duration isn't that surprising when it comes to four separate horror short films dedicated to audiences.

This impressive anthology features four stories revolving around a lonely woman, a cursed manuscript, a camping ghost story, and a flight attendant who must accompany a corpse on a flight. These four stories are really interesting and worth watching!

5. Philosophy Of A Knife (249 Minutes)

When a movie has such a long runtime, the topic is quite heavy. One of them is the Russian-American horror drama by writer/director Andrey Iskanov entitled Philosophy of Knife.

This movie has a duration of more than four hours which of course will make you tired of watching it. What's more, this film has violent and sadistic content which is not suitable for every audience. The movie, according to the Daily Mail, features actual archival footage from World War II featuring human experiments conducted by Unit 731.

The footage was mixed with interviews, voiceovers, and gruesome re-enactments of some of the carried out experiments.
