Dramatizing cases of demonic possession chronicled by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in the 1970s, James Wan's wildly popular horror movie The Conjuring began its own cinematic universe with sequels and spin-offs that are still in production today.

With a fourth Conjuring movie in development and a sequel to spin-off The Nun currently filming, the future of the horror world looks as bright as ever. Before we get to the new movie, there are a few Conjuring-like horror movies worth watching. Curious? Here’s the review!

1. Oculus (2013)

Both The Conjuring and movies like it mostly revolve around the classic horror concept of a cursed object. There is a uniquely macabre quality to stories about evil houses or demonic objects in that sinister inanimate objects have the power to take on their own threatening personalities.

One of the best is a movie called Oculus by Mike Flanagan. This movie follows two siblings struggling with the mind-altering powers of mirrors that seem to have caused traumatic events throughout history, including their childhood.

2. The Innocents (1961)

The Innocents is one of those amazing movies to watch because it forces the audience to question what they see and find fear in every detail.

Adapted from Henry James' The Turn of the Screw, this tale of a young governess and her ordeal in a supposedly haunted country estate formed the basis of most of the haunted house movies that followed, making it essential viewing for Conjuring fans.

3. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

Mystery is one of the biggest fear-inducing elements in the Conjuring franchise, as audiences unravel a series of dark truths and hidden histories along with the main characters.

Although The Autopsy of Jane Doe is set almost entirely in one location, the twists and revelations the two coroners uncover as they examine a mysterious corpse form a engrossing puzzle that is as sprawling as it is sinister.

4. The Night House (2020)

While the series is known for its supernatural horror elements, one of the most integral aspects of the Conjuring franchise is its focus on domestic drama, as it portrays ordinary people struggling with real-life emotional problems.

The Night House is another example of how these two storytelling mediums can be seamlessly woven together.

Rebecca Hall leads the movie as a recently widowed schoolteacher struggling to come to terms with her husband's sudden death when she begins to feel an otherworldly presence within their lakeside home.

5. Verónica (2017)

Some of the best horror movies like The Conjuring include movies set in the Conjuring universe revolving around stories of families struggling to cope after loss or other large-scale changes in their everyday lives.

Veronica, also adapted from true events, relates these facets to a story set in Spain in the early 1990s. The eponymous schoolgirl finds her already fractured life turned upside down when, after trying to contact her recently deceased father via a Ouija board, she is tormented by a demon.

6. The Legend of Hell House (1973)

Conjuring fans who want the story of The Haunting, but with a more brutal tone, must watch this movie. The story of The Legend of Hell House is taken by author Richard Matheson from his novel of the same name, the similarities between Hell House and Hill House are obvious.

The key difference is that the research group in Matheson's version takes a much more direct and Conjuring-like approach to grappling with the paranormal.

7. As Above, So Below

Set primarily in a series of hidden caves beneath the Catacombs of Paris, this paranormal found footage movie follows a quest to find a philosopher's stone that derails into a hellish fight for survival against supernatural forces.

Whether it's for the informative historical aspect or the adrenaline rush provided by the gory horrors, Conjuring fans will not be disappointed by this often immersive and sometimes emotional journey.
