Gorō Taniguchi Returns with Paris ni Saku Etoile: A Tale of Art, Dreams, and Friendship
Acclaimed director Gorō Taniguchi, best known for Code Geass and his contribution to One Piece Film Red, is back with a brand-new original project titled Paris ni Saku Etoile — internationally known as L'Etoile de Paris en fleur, or in English, Etoile Blossoming in Paris.
This highly anticipated film project will not stand alone; it’s been confirmed that the story will also receive a manga adaptation, giving fans an early chance to experience its heartfelt narrative.
The announcement appeared in the December issue of Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine, with the manga set to debut in the next issue releasing on November 25. The manga will be illustrated by Zerihan.
A Story of Two Japanese Girls Chasing Dreams in Paris
Set in the early 20th century, a time of cultural transformation and artistic revolution, the story follows two Japanese girls — Fujiko and Chizuru — who each pursue their dreams despite facing hardship. Fujiko aspires to become a painter, while Chizuru dreams of becoming a ballet dancer.
Their first meeting happens by chance at the Yokohama harbor, but destiny brings them together again in Paris, the city of art and passion. As they grow and face new challenges, they find strength in each other’s friendship.
The teaser visual features the tagline “I want to blossom, in this city.”, capturing the emotional essence of the story — a journey of self-discovery and hope in an unfamiliar land.
A Star-Studded Creative Team
The film is being produced by Arvo Animation, with Gorō Taniguchi directing. He collaborates for the first time with Katsuya Kondō, the legendary Studio Ghibli artist behind Kiki’s Delivery Service and Ponyo, who provides the original character designs.
The screenplay is written by Reiko Yoshida, the celebrated writer of Violet Evergarden, known for her ability to convey delicate emotions through nuanced storytelling. The film’s music is composed by Takayuki Hattori, whose classical and emotional compositions add depth to the atmosphere.
Ami Tōma voices Fujiko, while Yū Yamashita adapts Kondō’s designs for animation, ensuring the film maintains both elegance and expressiveness.
Manga Adaptation Ahead of the Film’s Release
The upcoming manga adaptation offers fans a glimpse into the world of Paris ni Saku Etoile before the film hits theaters. Illustrated by Zerihan, it is expected to highlight the same warmth, artistry, and emotional resonance as the movie.
For fans of historical dramas and art-themed storytelling, this project promises a touching and visually captivating experience.
The film is scheduled to premiere in Japan on March 13, with international distribution details likely to follow soon. Fans can look forward to additional updates, including a full trailer and cast announcements, through official channels such as Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine and Arvo Animation’s social media.
Combining heartfelt storytelling, the romantic beauty of early 20th-century Paris, and a powerhouse creative team, Paris ni Saku Etoile is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated anime films of 2026 — a celebration of dreams, friendship, and the courage to bloom wherever life takes you.
