Following the limited theatrical release in Japan back in February, the prequel for Fruits Basket titled Fruit Basket -prelude- is coming to theaters in the US, Canada, and the UK this summer. Here’s the official trailer for Fruit Basket -prelude-:

The subbed and dubbed versions of the movie will be available in select theaters in the US and Canada on June 25, 28, and 29. Tickets will be available for purchase starting on 3 June 2022.

The movie will also have a theatrical release in the UK on 20 July, only for the dubbed version. Tickets for the UK release will be available on 24 June. 

According to the press release, Fruits Basket -prelude- will follow Tohru Honda’s high school days, before Tohru meets and joins the problematic Soma family, and focuses more on Tohru’s parents, Kyoto and Katsuya Honda before they passed away. 

Directed by the series’ director, Yoshihide Ibata, and written by fellow Fruits Basket seasoned writer, Taku Kishimoto, the movie is animated by TMS Entertainment and 8PAN, which also animated the 2019 series. The 88-minute movie will be distributed by Crunchyroll. 

The Fruits Basket franchise has been running since the release of its manga in 1998, it follows the protagonist, Tohru Honda, who has a deep fascination with zodiacs and Chinese zodiacs, from the stories told by her mother since she’s little. However, a tragedy hits her, and she loses both of her parents. Then she begins to live in a tent as she doesn’t want to be a burden to her grandparents.
