Free Guy: When a Video Game NPC Rises Against
In Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds plays as an NPC who tried to change his destiny.

What would happen if a Non-Playable Character (NPC) in a wild video game such as Grand Theft Auto (GTA) realized that he’s just an unimportant character in a video game? That question is the central premise from the new Ryan Reynolds’ film titled Free Guy.
The film, which was previously produced by 20th Century Fox, had previously teased movie-goers with a Ryan Reynolds’ unique trailer a few months ago. But on Sunday (8/12), the production house finally released the first trailer for Free Guy.
In this movie, Reynolds plays as the main character named Guy, an NPC in an action-adventure game ala GTA. Despite being the main character, Guy’s life as an NPC is boring and mundane, while the people around him seem to experience exciting things, such as car chases or gunfights.
All of those changed when Guy deviates his routines and fights a player who tried to rob his bank. Armed with the glasses he got after disabling that player, Guy realizes that he’s just an NPC. In order to change his destiny, Guy tries to complete various missions in the game he lives in, just like a player.
Although this action-comedy story is entirely predictable, Free Guy offers an exciting perspective on video games. While usually we’re the main characters in a game and can do various fun things freely, this time we’ll see the game from an NPC’s point of view, which is dull and always become the victims. Not to mention, you can see Ryan Reynolds’ comedic presence that you’ve seen in Deadpool.
Free Guy is planned to be released on July 3 next year. Hopefully, this film will be able to realize the in-game life after movies like Pixels failed to do so.
