Apart from managing an empire, you also defend it from attackers in Skirmish mode, where you control one of the commanders and lead your troops on the open battlefield. Outside of battle, you can improve your attack and defense with the Military Might you collect, and controlling turrets and cannons in battle will give you an edge as well.

6. Little King's Story

Little King's Story puts you in the shoes of the 3 foot 8 inch little king of Corobo, who with his friends and advisors founded the Kingdom of Alpoko. At first, Corobo palace is small and dirty, but as your kingdom grows, it undergoes renovations.

Initial objectives involve searching for treasure, fighting wars, building facilities, increasing your popularity by completing side quests, and conquering a foreign kingdom across the river, which you can achieve with the help of your subjects, whom you command like Pikmin. However, battles are not easy, and battles against other kings are unconventional. Little King's Story also takes risks by breaking the fourth wall, criticizing polygamy, and asking you to reflect on your existence, all in one game.

7. The Sims Medieval

In the main series of The Sims, you can create whoever you want and build anything you dream of. In The Sims 4, you can build a house that looks like a castle and make your family pretend to be royal, or you can download a mod that makes your Sim and surrounding Sims think that your Sim is royal.

But in The Sims Medieval, you can play as a Monarch, one of ten available Hero types, as they negotiate with other rulers, listen to their citizens' complaints, and pass laws. The downside is that this spin-off strips you of the open world and most of the freedom of the base game, following a quest-style formula that has a definite ending.
