Horror games tend to have scary creatures, jumpscares, and sometimes even gore elements to make the players uneasy. However, there are some non-horror games that manage to frighten players without the classic horror formula.

As a matter of fact, some of the scariest games don’t even fall in the horror genre.

On this occasion, Dunia Games would like to give you a list of the scariest non-horror games that can actually compete with major horror games. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

1. Minecraft

Despite the colorful visuals and adorable character designs, this game is teeming with unnerving things. Minecraft manages to scare its players with scary cave sounds.

Aside from that, monsters like The Enderman and The Warden are also graphically scary, especially with the disturbing sound effects in the background. When playing Minecraft alone, these monsters will definitely make some players feel uneasy.

2. Garry’s Mod

Garry's Mod is far from a horror game. The sandbox game has no real gameplay and instead relies on players' creativity to build maps, vehicles, structures, and even the entire game modes.

However, this game can feel quite unnerving as players load empty, quiet sandbox maps. There are also two maps like gm_flatgrass and gm_construct that give the same vibe as the "Backrooms" creepypasta.

Those maps give an unsettling atmosphere of liminal spaces, which can usually be found in horror games.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Being the second 3D game in The Legend of Zelda series, Majora's Mask has a darker theme compared to the previous lighter entries. Not only does the game look much darker and more gothic, but many elements of the story and characters are also just as dark.

4. Subnautica

Subnautica is an open-world survival game where players have to survive in a vast ocean. If you think you don't have thalassophobia, you may get that phobia after playing this game.

The main source of fear for players in Subnautica is the vast and incredibly deep ocean. The game becomes even scarier once players start to find out about what's under the deep ocean.

In the depths of the ocean, players will encounter numerous eery creatures such as Crabsquids to Reaper Leviathans.

5. Portal

This one-of-a-kind sci-fi puzzle game has an eerie feel and holds some pretty disturbing secrets.

Players will be forced to complete a series of tests in an abandoned facility at the will of a psychopathic AI.

In this game, there are areas called Ratman Dens, hidden areas that contain images and warnings written by the last surviving employee of the facility.

6. Death Stranding

Even though it is an open-world action game, Death Stranding is an endless ride of horrors. While traversing the post-apocalyptic world, players will encounter hordes of ghostly apparitions referred to as BTs that provide tense moments as players try to get past them.

If a BT senses the player's presence, the ground beneath them turns into a very thick oil and slows the player down as they try to escape. Encounters with these entities throughout the game are enough to make players feel frightened.

7. Batman: Arkham Knight

This superhero-themed game also has several horror elements that always manage to keep players uneasy. Some of them are Killer Croc and Man-Bat, which have been infamously known to have made many players jump out of fear.

8. Firewatch

Firewatch is a cinematic adventure game with a beautiful art style. The player works as a fire lookout in a vast forest. Although it sounds like a light premise, the storyline turns pretty dark.

As players encounter disturbances in the forest, they quickly realize that they are not alone after noticing signs of human presence and seeing shadowy figures watching from a distance.

9. Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous is an open-ended simulation game in which players are required to complete missions and explore the vastness of space in their personal spaceship. The liberating open-world gameplay can make for a very scary experience with a sense of lostness in the vast universe.

10. Return of the Obra Dinn

Return of the Obra Dinn may strike as a standard puzzle-adventure game with a nautical theme, but the gameplay is actually quite a chilling experience as gamers solve clues around what happened to the crew of the missing ship.
