Do you love games with organized crime genres like the world of Mafioso? Some of the best mafia-themed open world games can make you feel like the ruler of a city, given that the mafia itself is an elegant, organized, and respected criminal organization that makes a great game.

An offer you can’t refuse.” This kind of dialog is very common in the world of mafia and true to its meaning, playing some of the best mafia-themed open world games is like an offer you can’t refuse. With that said, which of those mafia-themed games that can deliver the best experience for you to conquer the city?

1. Mafia: Definitive Edition

Released for PC, PS4, Stadia and Xbox One on September 25 2020 as a remake of the original 2002 Mafia game, Mafia: Definitive Edition entices players with stunning graphics, extremely detailed character models, realistic game physics, exciting shooting mechanics and so on.

In addition, this mafia game also depicts a story based on re-recorded, classic mafia-theme Jazz music to create some deep and stunning Mafioso atmosphere.

Set in Midwestern, United States during the recession era in the 1930s, Mafia Definitive Edition offers some of the best mafia-themed open world game experience on par with many other open world titles like Ghost of Tsushima.

Here, you play as a character named Tommy Angelo, a taxi driver who once upon a time happened to pick up a mafia member that was chased by the rival organization. This fateful encounter changes Tommy’s life for better or worse as he joins the mafia syndicate out of fear for his life and his precious taxi. True to their words, “An offer you can’t refuse.”

Tommy Angelo then seeks protection from the mafia syndicate Don Saileri and swears the Omerta oath to become one of the members. And that’s when Tommy’s journey in the world of mafia begins. He will tackle an array of missions ranging from robbery, gang wars, smuggling to hijacking a car race, all of which are fun to play with.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is made using the highly refined Mafia III engine with high resolution texture, new 3D models, and many other visual improvements. Furthermore, the game expands the story from the original 2002 version by adding character backstories to enrich the overall experience.

The gameplay also possesses equally impressive attention to details. For example, if you break through the traffic lights, police will chase and ticket your vehicle, which is very unusual in an open world game where the majority of the games simply have the police chase after you and imprison you for that kind of traffic violation.

2. Mafia II

If you’re looking for one of the best mafia-themed open world games with the most engaging storyline, Mafia II is the one for you. With a 9/10 average rating on Steam, this game depicts the story of Vito Scarletto, son of an Italian immigrant in America who once lived in poverty.

In 1943, Vito’s friend Joe persuades him to rob a jewelry store, but Vito himself was captured and taken away by the American military to join their training camp in Sicilia for World War II.

His experience in the war makes him realize that no matter how strong Mussolini’s fascist army can be, they will always bow down to the might of the mafia. Vito then returns to America and becomes a mafia called Joe.

Following the story, you can perform a variety of activities in Italy and America to further immerse yourself with the realistic experience. For example, if you rob a shop and leave behind an eyewitness, said eyewitness will report your identity to the police and they will chase after you relentlessly.

Because Mafia II is in the same universe as Mafia: Definitive Edition, you must play both games to get the best Mafia experience.

3. Scarface: The World Is Yours

“Say hello to my little friend!” Such is an iconic line from the legendary mafia Tony Montana from the Scarface movie, portrayed by the well-known Al Pacino. In the movie, Tony is depicted as a Cuban immigrant chasing after the American dream in Miami.

However, Tony is instead driven to the underworld and becomes the mafia that he is. And by the end of the movie, his Coral Gables mansion is under attack by the opposing mafia syndicate. Scarface: The World Is Yours is like the sequel to the movie that continues his story after the ambush at his mansion.

Developed by Radical Entertainment for PS2 and Xbox and released on July 25 2006, Scarface is a mafia-themed game that gives you some adrenaline rush because everything’s there to get you. Even in the water, a shark can come to get Tony if he stays on the water for too long.

Overall, Scarface has some exciting and interesting stories that will entice both newcomers and dedicated Scarface fans, incredible backsounds, and amazing graphics at its time. No wonder Scarface: The World Is Yours received several nominations during the award ceremonies during its era.

4. The Godfather

It’s hard to talk about the best mafia-themed open world games without talking about The Godfather. Based on the best Mafia movie in the world, The Godfather tells the story of Michael Corleone, son of the renowned Mafioso leader called Don Vito Corleone. As the player, you can customize Michael to your own liking.

Set in New York, The Godfather provides an open world adventure where you can take control of the black market and every business that is hidden in every part of the city, all while threatening the business owner for safety money.

Released in 2006 by EA Redwood Shores, The Godfather is the first of the duology that came out for the PS2, Xbox and Microsoft Windows. Its sequel offers better graphics with a more colorful experience, but the first game is a must-play for those who love mafia-themed games.

The main Yakuza titles follow the story of Kazuma “Dragon of Dojima” Kiryu, a yakuza member who traverses the packed cities in Japan such as the fictional Kamurocho. The gameplay utilizes a fighting game with a hint of RPG elements in it.

As you walk around the map, you will find enemies from either the opposing yakuza syndicates or street rogues, then you transition to the Battle Section. Once you win the battles, you return to the world map after receiving EXP, items and money from the enemies.

Another interesting feature of Yakuza is its simulation elements. Among many other activities or side quests, you can manage a cabaret club and several other night clubs.

6. Sleeping Dogs

Hong Kong’s very own mafia, Triad is well-known across the globe. Square Enix took inspiration from Triad and released a game based on their story called Sleeping Dogs.

Combining martial arts, gunfires and car chases, this open world game provides some very exciting experience. Sleeping Dogs tells the tale of undercover agent Wei Shen who infiltrates Triad to hunt down the Sun On Yee faction.

In this game, you can play the game both like a proper, polite police and a brutal Triad. Whatever method you choose to complete a mission will shape Wei Shan’s character as the story progresses.
