Tired of playing the same MOBA or FPS online games? How about this time we take a look at the list of free-to-play open world games that still have a lively community on Steam? Note: the data on the number of players is taken from the Steam Charts list belonging to the Steam Database or SteamDB web site, a site that (as the name implies) collects various kinds of data about Valve's digital shop. 

9. Totally Accurate Battlegrounds

Because battle royale games often feature open and huge maps (and this game does have an “open world” tag), we open this article with Totally Accurate Battlegrounds. With minimal graphics and a maximum physics engine, it pits 60 players and gives you more than 90 types of weapons spread all over the maps. Squad, duo, and solo modes are also available. The peak number of players once reached 29,438 people, in the last 24 hours though 2,161 active players were this game simultaneously.

8. Trove

If you are looking for a free-to-play game with voxel graphics but still want MMORPG elements such as grinding and leveling, look no further than Trove on Steam. This game has 16 unique classes such as Dino Tamer, Neon Ninja, or Chronomancer. There's also a Club system that lets you create your own world and then share access with other players. The PVP mode is also quite diverse, there is a battle royale mode, capture the flag, and team deathmatch. 2,181 people were playing this game in one day and the peak reached 58,949 players.

7. Planetside 2

Do you want to play a shooter with a large map but don't want to play any battle royales? No worries, Planetside 2 is here to save the day. Like a colossal version of Battlefield 2142, this free-to-play title invites you and your friends to fight for control of a planet as the militaristic Terran Republic, the freedom-fighters New Conglomerate, or Vanu Sovereignity with its alien weaponry. Each group has its own weapons and vehicles. This game was played by 29,676 people at the same time once, but now the highest number of players is only around 2,435 people.

6. Ring of Elysium

The game that was supposed to be PUBG's “biggest rival” in 2018 is still quite bustling with players, apparently. 2,534 people have played it in the last 24 hours and the highest number of players has touched 63,435 active players. Unfortunately, Indonesian gamers are going to need a VPN to install Ring of Elysium because the Steam version is blocked and not available on the Garena launcher either.

5. Will to Live Online

Similar to S.T.A.L.K.E.R., here you explore a world full of nuclear radiation, wild monsters, and mysterious "anomalies". But Will To Live Online is packed with more survival elements. Apart from dealing with mutants and looters, you must protect yourself from radiation, as well as hunger and thirst. Luckily you can trade and group up with other players. This free-to-play survival game was played by 2,217 people in the last 24 hours, and 3,108 players were active at the same time at some point of its lifetime.

4. EVE Online

This game invites you to become a spaceship businessman or space pirate, and is classified as one of the few true “sandbox MMORPGs” - almost all of the in-game contents are created from the contributions of its players. CCP Games only provides the basics such as game mechanics, spaceships, and locations (there are about 5,000 solar systems that you can explore), but the rest of the gameplay elements are controlled by the players. 

You can exchange items, equipment, and spaceship designs with other players. By joining a certain group, you can gather a fleet that is strong enough to attack and control the asteroid mines that were controlled by other groups. You can even try to threaten weaker newbies for loot! Not surprisingly, colossal conflicts that are recorded in the Guinness Book of Records happen often in EVE. As many as 4,704 people are currently playing the game at the time the writer is writing this article, and the highest number of players has touched 10,627 players - not even counting the number of players it got before EVE was published on Steam.

3. Runescape

A remake of an old school MMORPG that is very popular among American gamers. Like most other online games, Runescape provides an expansive world complete with various classes for your character; including 28 skills such as Woodcutting, Cooking, Crafting, Hunting, Runecrafting, Summoning, Dungeoneering, and many more. There is also a crossplay feature between the PC and mobile versions so you can continue your file wherever you are. There are 7,008 active players and the highest number reaches 12,569 people at the time of writing.

2. Albion Online

Another popular free-to-play open world MMORPG that is also on Steam. Compared to other games, Albion Online doesn't even provide classes for your character - you can simply use all kinds of equipment and then build your character’s skills freely. The in-game economy is also supported by players so the price of goods can fluctuate. You can join the Guild to fight over territory or live independently while raising farm animals casually. 11,009 people are still playing in the last 24 hours and the highest number of players was 13,363 active players

1. Unturned

And lastly, the free-to-play FPS survival made by a 13 year old Canadian teenager, Nelson Sexton. This survival game with voxel graphics has gameplay similar to DayZ, Rust, and the like. It is still successfully gotten 29,121 active players in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, the highest number of active players ever recorded for Unturned reached up to 63,462 people.
