The 1800s is indeed the most popular century that has inspired numerous video games. An era marked with social unrest, massive and global changes, industrial revolution, and the Victorian influence has served as inspiration for some of the best video games.

The iconic 19th century has inspired countless games, from AAA giants to smaller indie titles. With that in mind, on this occasion, Dunia Games would like to give you a list of the 10 best games set in the 19th century. Without further ado, let's get into it.

1. Assassin's Creed: Syndicate

Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate may not be the most popular pick of the franchise, but it's arguably one of the most-underrated entries. This game stars the two best protagonists throughout the series, namely the Frye siblings, Evie and Jacob. Syndicate takes place in London during the end of the industrial revolution, in 1868 to be more exact.

Syndicate is also one of the last entries in the Assassin's Creed series that adopts the gameplay popularized by Assassin's Creed II, with lots of stealth and nuanced combat in a small yet bustling open world.

Players can also meet real-life historical figures such as Alexander Graham Bell, Charles Dickens, and Florence Nightingale.

2. The Order: 1886

This game has so many things that make it a bad game; it's very short runtime, superficial gameplay, and too many QTEs. But despite all of that, The Order: 1886 managed to be one of the most unique games set in the 19th century. This historical game revolves around the many famous Knights of the Round Table as they attempt to defeat supernatural beings in Victorian London.

This game does have linear and mediocre gameplay, but manages to highlight the iconic 19th century alternative history.

3. Castlevania: Order Of Ecclesia

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is easily one of the best Castlevania games, something that doesn't come easy when compared to franchise giants like Symphony of the Night.

Order of Ecclesia stars Shanoa, a strong female protagonist who is tasked by Barlowe to go through the process surrounding Dracula's power known as Dominus. Things go south so quickly and Shanoa must now take part.

Castlevania always manages to shine with stellar settings and ambiance but the Order of Ecclesia's 1800s timeline makes it feel right at home in the gothic Victorian era.

4. MediEvil 2

The PS version is a 3D action platformer starring Sir Daniel Fortesque, who traverses through creative and colorful Victorian gothic themed stages in 1886. After defeating the evil wizard Zarok in the first game, Sir Daniel must now stop another villain, Lord Palethron, who aims to harness Zarok's dark magical powers but with mixed results.

Almost like the first game, MediEvil 2 combines the third-person action of exploration, and finding collectibles, with acquiring new weapons and moving along the path. The slapstick humor that Sir Daniel takes upon himself makes for a hilarious action platformer that fans of the genre should not miss.

5. Return Of The Obra Dinn

Return of the Obra Dinn is a unique narrative-based puzzle mystery game set in 1802 aboard the titular ship, Obra Dinn. When the ship happens to wash up ashore on British shores after an unsuccessful trading voyage years later, it becomes abundantly clear that something went horribly wrong during the voyage, with both the crew and passengers either dead or missing.

6. Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter

Set in the end of the 19th century, in 1896 to be more exact, Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter is a quirky mystery adventure game starring the titular detective. Its gameplay focuses on solving crimes, piecing together clues, and working with other characters to deduce motivations.

In The Devil's Daughter, Sherlock must protect Katelyn, the daughter of Moriarity, who's now deceased. With another mysterious character entering the heist, it's up to the player to deduce who they can trust and who may be on the other side.

7. Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Created by the horror-specialists Frictional Games, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is easily one of the scariest horror games around. Set in the unobtrusive Brennenburg Castle, players will be playing as Daniel, whose past and dark deeds seem to come back to haunt him around every corner.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent takes place in 1839, and the influence of the period can be felt throughout the game.

8. Anno 1800

Anno 1800 is a challenging RTS (real-time strategy) game with a heavy emphasis on city building and management. Anno 1800 takes place directly in the 19th century. This game is another entry in a long-running franchise, but it focuses on a New World setting with a Victorian influence.

Players control various groups of people, from craftsmen to production workers, to ordinary citizens as they work together to create bustling supply chains. Your goal in Anno 1800 is to build a thriving metropolis that has strong influence in the region.

9. Darkwatch

Darkwatch, the popular PlayStation 2 FPS tells the story of Jericho Cross, a fearless bounty hunter who tries to put a stop on the vampires. Set in the 1870s Arizona, Darkwatch combines western vibes with horror.

Swapping between revolvers, crossbows, and other unique weapons, Darkwatch sees Jericho tracking down the vampire overlord: Lazarus Malkoth.

10. Nightmare Creatures

Nightmare Creatures remains one of the best games set in the 19th century, especially in the horror genre. Although the story begins in 1666, most of the player's time is spent on the Victorian gothic period of the 1800s.
