Malphite is a Tank Champion who has a high Durability due to his Passive, which gives him shield after not taking damage for several seconds. Although he’s known as a solid Tank, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Malphite can’t dish out tremendous damage. With his Ultimate, Unstoppable Force, Malphite strikes through enemies in front of him. Now, to get a better grasp of this Champion, take a look at the following guide by Dunia Games.

1. Item Build

[Sunfire Cape]

For his first item, you may want to get Sunfire Cape. This item grants Malphite 40 armor and 400 HP to make him even tankier to bring down, especially against Marksman Champions. The Sunfire Cape also has a Passive, Immolate, which allows Malphite to clear the wave faster due to the magic damage area-of-effect (AoE) per second it offers.

[Mercury’s Treads]

For his boots, you can purchase Mercury’s Treads for Malphite. Since he has no real escape tools once he’s stunned, the reduction of CC duration by 30% from wearing Mercury’s Treads will help him greatly to escape from his enemies. This item also helps him to become more aggressive against Champions who rely heavily on CCs.

[Iceborn Gauntlet]

Next, you can get Iceborn Gauntlet for its 20% cooldown reduction. Aside from that, Iceborn Gauntlet also offers 50 armor to make him an even more solid ancient monolith. It also grants him 450 Mana, so Malphite will be able to spam Seismic Shard (1) more often.

[Abyssal Mask]

After that, you may want to get Abyssal Mask. This item makes Malphite immune to magic damage attacks with the 40 magic resist it offers. And, it also gives him a 10% cooldown reduction, 300 HP, and 300 Mana.

As for its Passive, Abyssal Mask restores Mana equal to 15% of damage taken. On top of that, it also restores HP equal to 20% of Mana spent.

[Thornmail]

To give Malphite an edge over the enemy Marksman, you can pick Thornmail for his next item. Thornmail grants 75 armor and 200 HP. And that’s not all. With its Passive, Thornmail also inflicts Grievous Wounds (reduces regen) on the Champions who attack him with Basic Attacks. Making it a perfect item to counter Marksman or Assasins like Master Yi.

[Adaptive Helm]

Lastly, you may want to pick the Adaptive Helm to give Malphite some magic resistance. With Adaptive Helm, Malphite will get 300 HP, 60 magic resist, and 100% HP regen. The Passive of Adaptive Helm reduces all subsequent magic damage by 15% for 4s.

[Upgrade Mercury Treads: Gargoyle Enchant]

For his boots upgrade, you can pick Gargoyle Enchant, as it will give Malphite an additional 40% max HP while also reducing damage taken by 60% for 4s after you activated this item. However, if there are 3 or more enemies nearby, it will increase his max HP by 100% instead.

2. Rune

[Grasp of The Undying]

For his Keystone, you can pick Grasp of The Undying, which allows Malphite to sustain longer in the lane by restoring 2% of his max HP if he manages to hit a target with Basic Attacks. To trigger the Grasp of The Undying, you need to land attacks on minion/Champion to generate stacks.

After reaching 4 stacks, your next Basic Attack will deal 4% magic damage and restore 2% of your max HP.

[Weakness]

For his second rune, you may want to get Weakness. Why this rune? Because Malphite has a lot of CCs, both Slow and Stun. For that very reason, the Passive Weakness offers, which gives additional damage to stunned or slowed enemies, will complement him very well.

[Conditioning]

For the next Rune, you can go with Conditioning. This Rune grants him 8 bonus armor and magic resist after 5 minutes of game time. Although it sounds not that significant, it’s really useful when the game progresses to the mid-game!

[Pack Hunter]

Last but not least, you should grab Pack Hunter. This Rune grants him an additional 2% bonus Movement Speed when near allies. It also gives him and each ally involved in a Champion takedown a bonus of 50 gold.

3. Spells

[Flash]

Flash is a Spell for the people. Almost every Champion uses this Spell to chase down enemies or escaping from them. However, this cooldown for Spell is quite long, 150s.

[Ignite]

Ignite greatly benefits Malphite in duels. You can use Ignite when the enemy HP is critically low, as it will burn your target with 60-410 true damage (based on level) for 5s -- finishing off your target when they try to escape the team fight.

4. Combo

In terms of combos, Malphite works best as a team fight initiator. Here’s how to ambush your opponents using Malphite:

Unstoppable Force (Ultimate) -> Ground Slam (3) -> Thunder Clap (2) -> Seismic Shard (1)

5. Gameplay

  1. Use Seismic Shard (1) to trade with your matchup;
  2. Don’t feel intimidated by enemy melee Champions who rely on Attack Speed. With his Ground Slam (3), Malphite can reduce their Attack Speed and turn the situation around;
  3. Avoid using Unstoppable Force (Ultimate) impulsively. Take your time and wait until there are 3-5 enemy Champions crowded together so you will have more enemies knocked up in the team fight.
