The world of Raphtalia as Naofumi entered the picture was a fusion of the four ancient worlds. They have been summoned to repel the attacks of evil spirits and monsters when the waves of disaster unfold and ensure the survival of the Raphtalia World, specifically Melromarc which is a matriarchal kingdom ruled by the Melromarc monarchy where the Queen holds true authority over the country.

It is a well-known fact that every hero should have a companion because it is difficult to save the world alone. This is where the other characters appear, Raphtalia and Filo. Raphtalia is a raccoon demi-human who lost her family during the First Wave. When Naofumi first met Raphtalia, she was plagued with health problems, too weak to fight even the smallest enemy.

After joining Naofumi, Raphtalia's health improved dramatically and she learned how to fight with the sword. After a long and tumultuous journey, Raphtalia eventually becomes Naofumi's most loyal companion and develops a strong bond with the Hero.

The next character who joins Naofumi is Filo, a Filolial who can transform into a human and a giant bird. Naofumi bought her from the same merchant who introduced him to Raphtalia. Filo's appearance is very similar to the Chocobo from the Final Fantasy series. As it turned out, Filo was indeed inspired from there.

When Raphtalia and Filo join Naofumi on his quest, it's clear that Naofumi has a dark side.
