Characters can be said to have an important role in the life of a series, especially for franchises that are quite large. In Game of Thrones, you could say there are many characters that even make fans disappointed when the character is killed, as well as later in House of the Dragon. House of the Dragon: Targaryen Family Tree Explained

After the trailer was shared on Thursday, May 5th 2022, the House of the Dragon series, which is a spin-off from Game of Thrones, has become a highly anticipated series, especially for Game of Thrones fans. The House of the Dragon series itself will have a story that has been confirmed as a prequel story of Game of Thrones, so for those who haven't watched all of the Game of Thrones series it won't be a problem. The House of the Dragon series will explore further the Targaryen family lineage long before the struggle for the throne in Game of Thrones.

1. Aerys Targaryen - The Mad King

King Aerys Targaryen, was Aerys II because he was also the son of Aegon V, as well as the last Targaryen to reign. He had been dethroned some 20 years before the events in the show began, known as the "Robert Rebellion." Aerys is also known as "The Mad King" because, although he was seen as a wise and true leader during the first decade of his reign, as he grew older, he became increasingly insane.

2. Rhaella Targaryen

Rhaella is the queen and daughter of Aegon V, also the younger sister of her husband, Aerys. Apart from that, she is also the mother of Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys. But she was not at all happy in her marriage, and even Mad King Aerys was sometimes violent towards her. Not much else is known about her, except during "Robert's Rebellion". After her eldest son Rhaegar was killed fighting Robert in The Trident, she fled the capital back to Dragonstone, where she died giving birth to her youngest daughter, Daenerys.

3. Daenerys Targaryen - The Dragon Queen

Daenerys Targaryen is the youngest daughter of Aerys and Rhaella, she is behind her older brother, Viserys. Their older brother, Rhaegar, was dead by the time Dany was born, and she is one of the last two Targaryen who seem to have survived. Over the years, Dany's power grew as her followers grew, The Dothraki, The Unsullied, The people of Mereen, Jorah Mormont and finally Jon Snow, all saw her as their queen.

4. Viserys Targaryen

Viserys Targaryen saw himself as the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, and he was once smuggled out of Westeros with his sister Daenerys and made as a king. Armed in Vaes Dothrak, Dany's husband, Khal Drogo, Viserys traded Dany as a thing. They melted Viserys' gold jewelry and poured molten gold on his head, giving him the crown, but not the crown that he wanted. With Viserys' death, Daenerys officially becomes the last Targaryen in the world.

5. Rhaegar Targaryen

Rhaegar Targaryen is the eldest son of The Mad King, Aerys II. He was the true heir to the throne before the Robert Rebellion and also the cause of the rebellion. Although he married Elijah Martell and had two children with her, the marriage was annulled and he secretly married Lyanna Stark. But after marriage, a rebellion broke out, Robert defeated and killed Rhaegar at the Battle of the Trident. There, Ned finds his sister in The Tower of Joy as she gives birth to her child with Rhaegar.

6. Rhaenys dan Aegon Targaryen

Before Rhaeger annulled his marriage to Elijah Martell, they had two children together, a daughter named Rhaenys and a son named Aegon. Elijah, Rhaenys and Aegon were all killed brutally by The Mountain, a Lannister loyalist during Robert's Rebellion, and it happened during Sack of King's Landing. But his death inspires one of the best fights in the show's history as Elijah's brother Oberyn seeks revenge for their rape and murder in a battle to the death with The Mountain.

7. Jon Snow - Aegon Targaryen

Jon Snow is known as Ned Stark’s bastard, who was conceived during Robert's Rebellion and brought back to Winterfell by Ned. Jon Snow is not fully Jon Snow, because he is known as the sixth Aegon Targaryen and heir to the Iron Thrones. As the only surviving son of the true Targaryen heir, Jon becomes the true heir, to the best claims of anyone, including his aunt, Daenerys Targaryen.

8. Maester Aemon Targaryen

There is another Targaryen in Game of Thrones, he is called “Maester Aemon Targaryen”, who served Castle Black as a sworn member of the Night's Watch. He is the brother of Aegon V, who was Daenerys' grandfather and Jon Snow's great-grandfather. Aemon had given up all claims to his family's wealth and power when he took "The Black."

So those are the characters you need to know, and all of them are the Targaryen family tree as they are known in Game of Thrones. Dany, being the sister of Jon's biological father, Rhaegar, is actually Jon's aunt. While Targaryen has long been married to keep the lineage pure. So who will have a better claim on the Iron Throne?
