Demon Slayer is arguably one of the saddest shonen series. Despite the numerous friendly and adorable characters such as the loving Tanjiro Kamado, or Zenitsu Agatsuma, who can move as fast as lightning only when he's asleep.
However, almost all of the characters in this anime come from tragic backgrounds, including some villain characters with the most heartbreaking backstories. On this occasion, Dunia Games would like to give you a list of the demons with the most tragic backstories from Demon Slayer. Without further ado, let's get into it.
1. Akaza
You may know Akaza as the demon who killed the Fire Hashira Rengoku. However, he is one of the characters with the saddest background in the anime. Akaza, who lived in a slum and had no money, had to struggle to provide for his ailing father. Akaza had to steal money, but this actually made his father commit suicide as he didn't want to burden him.
After his father died, he was expelled from his hometown until finally a dojo owner named Keizo took him and promised to teach martial arts if he would take care of his daughter, Koyuki. Unfortunately, his life took a hard turn when a rival dojo leader poisoned Koyuki. This led to Akaza sinking into his rage and killing everyone in his rival's dojo.
2. Gyutaro
When he was still a human, Gyutaro grew up in poverty. Despite growing up in the glamorous entertainment district, Gyutaro couldn't enjoy his life. Gyutaro's mother would hit him constantly after her miscarriage and ended up abandoning her children, whereas people constantly mocked and bullied him for his appearance. Gyutaro fought for his life. He even had to eat pests. Mewanwhile, Daki, who had a beautiful face, slowly made Gyutaro's life easier, but this only lasted a moment before Daki was brutally killed.
3. Rui
Rui was born with a terrible disease that made him a sickly child. Unlike other children, he couldn't play freely. His parents always prayed for a better life for him. But then he negotiated with Muzan, in exchange of becoming a demon. He did get cured from his illness by becoming a demon, yet he developed the hunger for human flesh and even killed his parents to sate his hunger.
4. Kyogai
Kyogai was once a writer, but he got fed up with his work. He often received harsh criticism regarding his writings. He was surprised when Tanjiro didn't want to step on his writing or berate his terrible writing. Tanjiro's kindness made his eyes tear up. Kyogai was so used to receiving verbal abuse that he gave up writing and chose to become a demon to prove himself worthy of being a member of the Twelve Kizuki demon Muzan. All that Kyogai wanted to is to receive recognition for his work as either a human or a demon.

5. Daki
In contrast of Gyutaro's childhood when he was hated for his appearance, Daki actually received a lot of praise for her beautiful looks. Taking advantage of this, Gyutaro used his younger sister as a shield from the cruelty of others against him. But one day, Daki met a ruthless samurai, and she ended up getting burned alive. And she was turned into a demon thanks to Douma who turned the siblings into demons.
6. Yahaba & Susamaru
These demons are the pair whom Muzan promised to include to the Twelve Kizuki. Muzan brainwashed them into believing that they were already members of the Twelve Kizuki when they weren't actually in the Upper Rank. Yahaba was level-headed and relying on his ears for everything, while Susamaru was childish and impudent. They believed in Muzan even though he tricked them. Yahaba and Susamaru still believed that those with the thirst would get Muzan's praise. But both of them were killed by the Demon Slayers and died without Muzan even caring about them.
7. Spider Demon (Mother)
A member of the family that Rui formed, was a demon who became the Mother of this made-up family. Every member of the spider family that Rui formed had tragic backgrounds when they were still a human. This spider demon and the mother of the family, lived in fear of Rui's wrath even though she actually didn't want to hurt anyone. The spider mother was forced to act on her instincts so as not to be replaced by someone new for disobeying Rui.
