The Pokémon world is currently in an uproar over the passing of James Carter Cathcart, a voice actor who contributed significantly to the English dub of the Pokémon anime. This news is certainly a source of grief for Pokémon fans worldwide, as he was a key figure in the entertainment industry for many years.
James Carter Cathcart, also known as Jimmy Zoppi, has passed away at the age of 71. He died at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York. Cathcart is best known for voicing James (Team Rocket), Meowth, and Professor Oak in over 700 Pokémon episodes and dozens of English-language action films.
He was born on March 8, 1954, and has been with Pokémon since the English dub began airing in the late 1990s. Besides Pokémon, he has also provided voices for other anime and cartoons, such as Yu-Gi-Oh! and Sonic X.
Beyond dubbing, Cathcart was a talented musician. He performed as a keyboardist and songwriter, and had a musical career dating back to the 1980s. In 2023, he announced his retirement from voiceover work after being diagnosed with throat cancer, which affected his vocal abilities. After undergoing treatment for nearly two years, James Carter Cathcart passed away on July 8, 2025.
