In recent years, superhero genres and characters dominate the entertainment industry, starting from the silver screen, television series, animations, to video games. Both DC and Marvel are always racing to introduce superhero characters to entertain their audiences.

The comic book industries said above surely conquered the entertainment world with their superhero characters. But, outside those two, some other publishers and companies managed to introduce their superheroes and success. Here are six superhero characters outside DC and Marvel Comics.

1. Hellboy

Hellboy is the perfect example of how other publishers aside from DC and Marvel Comics can create an awesome and loveable superhero. Released in 1993 under Dark Horse Comics, Hellboy has many fans since then to this day. With three solo films, spin-off comics, and various video game appearances, this character looks like he will getting more famous in the future.

2. Spawn

Released in 1992 by Image Comics, Spawn is an anti-hero character by Todd McFarlane. With a fierce, intimidating look and deep storyline compared to Marvel Comics, Spawn has many fans from teenagers to adults. Until now, Spawn only has one solo movie, but there’s a rumour that the reboot movie is under production.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or sometimes called TMNT for short, is a band of superheroes created by Mirage Studios in 1993. Even though they were not from DC or Marvel, these four turtles managed to gain many fans due to their distinct appearances. Currently, these turtles are pop culture icons with various media, starting from comic books, animated series, video games, TV series, to live-action movies.

4. The Incredibles

If you were born in the 90s and had watched The Incredibles back in 2004, surely understand this thing. Still, if you’re new to this family superheroes via The Incredibles 2, there’s a fat chance that you think that they are originated from Marvel Comics with Big Hero 6 fashion. You should know that this family of superheroes is the original creation of Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. It’s different than other superheroes in this list, The Incredibles doesn’t adapt from any superhero comic books.

5. Plastic Man

Plastic Man probably not a very well-known superhero in DC today, but if you have read the comics, surely you know this guy. Even though he’s currently active in the DC universe, Plastic Man is not originated from DC. Created in 1941, Plastic Man was created by Quality Comics. Unfortunately, in 1950, Quality Comics went bankrupt and sold their license to DC, ever since that day, Plastic Man becomes a member of the DC universe.

6. Shazam

If you’re shocked by Plastic Man’s fact, then maybe Shazam’s fact will shock you more. Knows as one of the famous characters from DC and the member of the Justice League, not many people know that DC does not create Shazam.

Shazam is a character created by Fawcett Comics in 1939 to challenge Superman’s popularity from DC. The great thing was Shazam’s popularity managed to beat Superman’s few times. Feeling that their character copied by Fawcett Comics, DC sued Fawcett Comics into the court and, as a result, prohibit Fawcett from using Shazam.

Ironically, a few years later, DC purchased Fawcett Comics and rebranding Shazam in DC comics.
