If you are interested in entering the anime and manga world, it might be better for you to know these basic terms in the anime world. Of course you don’t want to keep asking, “What does this mean?” or “What is the meaning of this word?”. If you want to know the otaku terms earlier, it will be easier for you to hang out in the Japanese community.
So, to know more about the terms, here are the 10 terms often found in the otaku community.
1. Loli and Shota
Loli and shota are the nicknames among the otakus for the small characters; loli for small girls and shota for small boys. So, well for any anime characters with small posture despite of their ages, the characters will be referred to as loli or shota.
2. Ero, Ecchi, and Hentai
These terms often appear in 18 years and above contents. You need to know these terms to avoid them if you are still underage.
'Ero' comes from the word 'erotic' which means that the anime and manga have adult content. Ecchi and hentai are part of ero. Ecchi generally refers to dirty content that is not too extreme while hentai is a more explicit adult content - but hentai itself in Japan has the same meaning as the word 'pervert' or 'flirty' only and does not have to be content that is 'too extreme'.
3. Fanservice
Fanservice is a term for scenes in anime and manga aimed at pleasing you as an animanga fans; It doesn't have to be just a dirty scene but it can also be like a reference to classic series or other things that give a 'plus value' to the viewers.
Actually, the fanservice term can be used in various medias, such as films or Western comics, but it often said by the otakus.
4. Bishounen – Bishoujo
Bishounen and bishoujo are the words in Japanese meaning ‘beautiful man’ and ‘beautiful women’. So, the very pretty male characters in anime can be called as bishounen, and for the very beautiful female characters in anime often referred to as bishoujo.
5. Mahou Shoujo
Mahou shoujo is the sub-genre of a fantasy anime or manga that tells the story of female characters who can transform and have magical abilities. If translated, ‘mahou’ means ‘magic’ and ‘shoujo’ means ‘girl’; then mahou shoujo is magical girl.
6. Isekai
The isekai term in the weeaboo world is an anime or manga where the main character is transported/summoned/reincarnated in a different world from their original world and becomes very powerful by showing their unique abilities in that world.
7. Mobage dan Kusoge
Mobage is an abbreviation of mobile game in Japanese. For that reason, mobage often used for the games in the smartphone. However, in Japan itself, there was a gaming platform (like Facebook Gaming or Kongregate) called Mobage owned by DeNA so don’t get confused, okay?
Well, for kusoge itself is a term refers to a game with the features that disliked by its players. The word ‘kuso’ in Japanese meaning ‘shit’, so kusoge means….you can guess it, right?
8. Seiyuu
The term used for voice actors in Japan is seiyuu. Seiyuu provides voices of anime or video game characters, radio plays, narratives, and also voices for foreign films.
9. Pettanko
The combination of the words 'pettan' which means 'flat' and 'ko', an affixed word for girls. So, pettanko is a 'flat-chested girl' or a girl with a slim body posture.
10. Meganeko
Meganeko is also a combination of words like pettanko. 'Megane' means glasses in English. So, Meganeko is a term for anime girl characters who use glasses.
