After 10 years, Monkey D. Luffy finally managed to defeat Kaido in One Piece. Since the Punk Hazard arc, the battle between the two pirate captains has been building up to this point, but if that wasn't enough, another One Piece mystery has finally been answered. The mystery is about Joy Boy's past which is an interesting thing.

By the time Luffy awakened his devil fruit, most people already assumed he was the fairytale Joy Boy returning to the land of Wano, but for what reason was Kaido so obsessed with a man who was nothing more than a myth until the very end of the attack on Onigashima? And how many of his actions were driven by an obsession with finding him?

Kaido Thinks He is Joy Boy

Throughout his fight with Luffy, the manga kept implying that Kaido knew more about the secrets of this world than he ever showed, especially when it came to Joy Boy. He even said the other characters "couldn't be Joy Boy... well, it seems...," implying that even though he doesn't know his real identity, he still recognizes Joy Boy.

But even so, there seems to be a connection between the two that goes much deeper than his fight with Luffy. King's flashback with Kaido implies that ever since the two met, Kaido was somewhat aware of Joy Boy's existence, having learned about it from King. It seems that the two believe Kaido is actually the reincarnation of a legendary figure, with Kaido claiming that he is the one who will change the world, just as Joy Boy did 800 years earlier.

This could explain why he was so eager to arrive at Wano, as Joy Boy was prophesied to return there. Although it was recently confirmed that Luffy is the actual reincarnation, it is clear that Kaido probably realized that it would take years for that to be proven.

In his flashbacks, Kaido's philosophy of human nature is strongly displayed. He resented the idea of nobility and the ruling class, hurling insults at the Celestial Dragons. In Kaido's mind, he believed humans were animals governed by the laws of nature.

In this sense, war and battlefield are places where he believes that all beings are basically the same, with the only determining factor being his own power and will. Furthermore, Kaido believes that it is through war that true equality and freedom can be achieved.

In a world ruled by a group of blood, selfish and cruel individuals like the Celestial Dragons, Kaido's desire for a world of freedom and equality is actually quite noble. However, Kaido's mentality of power contradicts this as he uses it as an excuse to enslave the Wano people.

Joy Boy is someone who brings happiness and smiles to all he meets and believes in freedom for all. Kaido may start out as someone with the power and desire to liberate the world, but his methods are not what Joy Boy wants.

Joy Boy’s True Missions

The first time fans were introduced to Kaido, they saw him attempt suicide by jumping from a sky island straight onto an island on the surface. Since then, Kaido has been looking for a strong opponent to fight as well as something or someone in the world who can actually kill him.

After chapter 1049, it looks like all of this might stem from his obsession with Joy Boy. During his flashback, Kaido tells King that he believes Joy Boy's identity will be the one to finally bring him down. This actually provides a lot of context to many of his actions that led to his defeat.

It's unclear how much he knows about Joy Boy, but Kaido definitely knows that Joy Boy will return to Wano at some point and become a man who will change the world and free him from tyranny and oppression.

What if Kaido, knowing this, decides himself to become a bad enough villain that Joy Boy himself has to come and stop him. What he predicted turned out to be right where Luffy, who was considered Joy Boy's reincarnation, actually beat him.

Kaido's True Wish

If Kaido knew he wasn't the one who was truly destined to bring the freedom and equality he wanted into the world, it makes sense that he would go to great lengths to find a man who would.

He became the opposite of Joy Boym even to the point of hanging out with Celestial Dragon and their agent CP0. Kaido had literally turned himself into a monster that only Joy Boy could stop, and based on that, that seemed to be his main goal all along.

This also explains why he gets very angry at those who would interrupt or finish his fight before it ends. Both Oden and Luffy are a class of rare individuals with the potential to overpower him, meaning they have the potential to become Joy Boy.

It even explains why he killed Oden in a way that was so against his will. Oden not only lost the fight, but even after he was captured, he willingly chose to let himself die, choosing to put his trust in future generations and their followers. That way Kaido can see that as good as Oden is, he is not the person he was looking for because Oden not only allowed himself to lose in the end, but fought so that the real Joy Boy could arrive at Wano in the future.

As Luffy dealt the finishing blow against Kaido, with his ultimate attack, he asked Luffy what kind of world he wanted to create. Both his question and his reaction to Luffy's answer made it seem as if this was what he had been waiting for all along.

Even during the attack, Kaido could easily dodge it if he wanted to, but willingly chooses to confront it with his own strongest move, almost as a final test for the man he feels might actually be Joy Boy.

If Joy Boy is the one who will bring down Kaido, then Luffy needs to prove beyond a doubt that he has the power and will to do so. Kaido is a man who wants to create a better world, and when he realizes that he is not the one who can do it, he sacrifices himself to find a man who can.
