Ahead of its second season, Kaiju No. 8 hits theaters with its newest anime film titled Mission Recon. But the question is—does it deserve your time, or is it just another recap?

Rotten Tomatoes has just launched the review page for Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon, although it hasn’t assigned an official “Fresh” or “Rotten” rating yet due to the limited number of critic reviews.
However, the audience score is already up, currently sitting at 75% positive. That shows a fairly good early response, although not as enthusiastic as the original anime series, which scored 100% Fresh with a 90% audience rating when it aired in Spring 2024.

Mission Recon is a compilation film, similar to Solo Leveling: ReAwakening, summarizing key events from Season 1. While it suffers from common omnibus film issues—like an abrupt ending—some critics say it still delivers a satisfying cinematic experience.

Ayaan Paul Chowdhury from The Hindu praised its action and visuals. “The action scenes are glorious,” he said, “blending parkour-style movement with Godzilla-meets-Evangelion chaos.” The comparison is fitting, as Studio Khara—best known for working on Evangelion—designed the Kaiju in this film.

Christopher Cross of Asynchronous Media acknowledged the film’s limitations as a recap, but highlighted its impressive set pieces and an interesting narrative twist, even if it doesn’t fully resolve.
Daniel Kurland from CBR echoed a similar view, pointing out that the ending feels abrupt due to the constraints of a compilation format. Still, he recommends the movie thanks to the bonus episode “Hoshina’s Day Off,” which is a fun addition.

In conclusion, Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon may not be a perfect standalone film, but it’s still worth watching—especially for die-hard fans of the anime. With top-tier visuals, thrilling action, and an enjoyable bonus episode, this film serves as a great warm-up before Season 2 premieres in July 2025. So, if you’re not over Kaiju No. 8 yet, this one deserves a spot on your watchlist!
