Hell's Paradise is an action-packed and emotional story about a group of criminals and samurai looking for the elixir of life on a dangerous island. The setting for the anime makes it a very character-driven anime with a large and diverse cast of characters.

The three kinds of characters in this anime cover three main groups: Yamada Asaemon, the villains, and Tensen. While Tensen hasn't been covered much, much of Yamada Asaemon and the villain have had memorable arcs and moments that will have many fans excited for season 2.

Yuzuriha

Yuzuriha is the only powerful shinobi besides Gabimaru. She is one of the most cunning villains so far and is constantly using other characters as best she can to further her path to the elixir of life.

You can see Yuzuriha's strength and intelligence, but she also plays an important comedic role in a very dark story. Her easy-going personality makes her a funny figure in her own right and the butt of many jokes. Her scenes with Gabimaru, in particular, made fans laugh.

Mei

Mei is a strange child-like creature related to Tensen but without the ability to switch genders. Born with only her "Yin", or female side, Mei flees to join Gabimaru and her human side as a strong friend.

While Mei has had a more mature adult form in flashbacks, fans have yet to see her form in action. So, it's unclear whether her mentality becomes more mature while in that form. For now, Mei is indeed a kind girl and a formidable ally, but her lack of communicative skills makes it difficult for her to interact with the others.

Yamada Asaemon Shion

Yamada Asaemon Shion joins characters like Toph Beifong in a roster of incredibly blind characters who perceive the world around them with a special sixth sense. In Shion's case, his blindness makes her more attuned to Tao than any other character.

Shion is one of the coolest characters in the series, and his skill with the sword is unmatched. He is the strongest Asaemon in season 1 and will become a bigger threat to Tensen the more he masters Tao.

Yamada Asaemon Tenza

Yamada Asaemon Tenza is a character that fans have grown to love even with just a few highlight episodes, and his death was beautifully handled. Tenza rescued characters who would become much more important later on, Yamada Asaemon Shion and also Nurugai.

His death proves to be worth it as he sees hope in these two characters going forward.

Aza Chobei

Chobei has proven to be one of Hell's Paradise's strongest characters and has the greatest mastery of Tao outside of Tensen. Besides his immense strength and ability to adapt to any situation has made him a fan favorite.

Chobei's relationship with Toma also humanizes him and shows a softer side even though he is like a monster.

Yamada Asaemon Sagiri

Many anime are guilty of not giving their female protagonists enough screen time, but Yamada Asaemon Sagiri has been the perfect deuteragonist for this anime.

Sagiri's struggle with her job as an executioner is very interesting, and her friendship with Gabimaru is one of the best parts of this story. Strong Platonic male/female relationships in anime are rare, and the way they work and learn from each other works out surprisingly well.

Gabimaru the Hollow

Gabimaru the Hollow is the protagonist of Hell's Paradise and one of the best protagonists in any action anime. Gabimaru's character development throughout the series and his relationship with his wife and Sagiri provide some of the most touching moments in modern anime.

The first season explored Gabimaru's weaknesses and what true strength is. A shinobi's second chance at life as an assassin turned protector speaks to a powerful message of redemption and anyone can change.
