The Word 'Definitive' in GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is Quite Questionable
Based on what we’ve seen, it seems that GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition doesn’t deserve to be called 'Definitive'

The GTA Trilogy isn’t the only franchise that uses the “Definitive Edition” tag for its remastered version. There are some other titles that use the label like Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, Mafia Trilogy The Definitive Edition, etc. However, of the many franchises that use the tag “Definitive Edition”, the GTA Trilogy is the only one with a disastrous release and an “unpolished” end product.
It has made me wonder, what’s actually the definition of the term “Definitive Edition”. And how did Rockstar’s failure in designing and releasing GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition trigger a review bomb from the majority of the fans? To find the answer, let’s take a look at the definition of the word “definitive”.
According to Mirriam-Webster, something that is definitive means that it is complete and final. Whereas Cambridge Dictionary defines the word “definitive” to refer to something that is absolute, final, and complete; not able to be changed or improved.
In gaming terms, Definitive Edition may refer to the final, complete version of a certain title. Meaning that the developer and publisher are unlikely to create another version of the title, whether it’s a remaster, remake, or reboot. And, based on the aforementioned definitions, it’s fair to assume that GTA Trilogy The Definitive Edition serves as the final version of the trilogy.
The tag “Definitive Edition” eventually left fans disappointed. The biggest reason is, instead of giving its best efforts, Rockstar has let this version taint the originals. The obvious example is the number of bugs in the game. This version is so full of bugs, so much so that a YouTuber made a one-hour-long bug compilation video.
Not to mention the management issues, the game design that is meant for the mobile market, the lies from Take-Two Interactive CEO, the discriminative action against certain consumers, the marketing lies, a timeline-breaking easter egg, and the betrayal from the developer & publisher to fans. We’ve already discussed all of them here.
For me personally, as well as the majority of GTA fans who have followed this franchise since the early 2000s, the definitive version of the GTA Trilogy clearly doesn’t deserve to be labeled as Definitive Edition. The GTA Trilogy that we’ve known was the GTA games that follow the story of criminal groups in the real world. Each city has its own characteristics, especially its color tone. Whereas the Definitive version doesn’t bring these characteristics to life, the cities look dull, and the character models look like Sims doing a roleplay as criminals. So, the Definitive Edition has surely ruined the essence of the trilogy.
