It’s no secret that the plots in the Grand Theft Auto series revolve around betrayal. Catalina betraying Claude in GTA III, Lance Vance betraying Tommy Vercetti in GTA Vice City, Big Smoke and Ryder betraying CJ in GTA San Andreas, and so on.

One of the most heartbreaking stories of betrayal comes from GTA IV, where Niko Bellic gets betrayed by his own romantic interest, Michelle. This relationship has a significant impact on the storyline in GTA IV as it prompts Niko Bellic to deal with various problems.

Niko & Michelle’s Love Story

Niko Bellic first met Michelle in the mission Three’s a Crowd, where Niko was sent by his cousin, Roman Bellic, to pick up his crush, Mallorie Bardas. Since the beginning, Mallorie was already friends with Michelle, so Mallorie introduced Michelle to Niko when he picked them up.

Shortly after, Niko collected his courage to ask Michelle for a date. In the mission: First Date, Niko took Michelle to a funfair. Unfortunately, the funfair wouldn’t open until the night, so, they spent time together playing bowling.

Ever since then, Niko and Michelle started dating. Michelle always showed her affection towards Niko, and Niko began to set aside his insecurities and told her stories that he wouldn’t tell anyone else.

Shortly after Niko moved to Liberty City, he had to face a hard reality. The apartment he shared with his cousin Roman Bellic, was set on fire by his enemy Dimitri Rascalov. But that’s not all, Roman’s taxi depot was also set on fire. At that point, they had no place to live nor jobs in Liberty City.

Luckily, Mallorie had a cousin who owned an apartment in South Bohan. So, Niko and Roman could stay for a while in the apartment.

South Bohan, a Blessing That Leads to Disasters

Shortly after moving to South Bohan, Mallorie introduced Niko to a woman named Elizabeta Torres, who’s the biggest d**g dealer in Bohan. Given Niko desperately needed a job, he agreed to work for Elizabeta Torres and her d**g empire.

In the mission: The Snow Storm, Elizabeta Torres sent Niko to retrieve packages of c*****e stolen by a gang. So, Niko went to an old hospital, the headquarters of said gang.

Soon after Niko retrieved Elizabeta’s package, he’s surrounded by the NOOSE units. At the time, Niko had no idea how NOOSE would know about his mission at the old hospital.

Long story short, Niko managed to escape from the NOOSE units and delivered the package to Little Jacob, Elizabeta’s middle man.

But when he met Little Jacob, Michelle showed up and confessed that she’s a secret agent, working for the government. Michelle was assigned to watch Niko’s criminal activities in Liberty City.

Sacrificing Romance for a Career

As it turned out, Michelle was working at an organization called the ULP (United Liberty Paper), which is a secret organization that belongs to the IAA (International Affairs Agency). The ULP is led by a middle-aged man named Bernard, often referred to as Agent ULP, who would also make several appearances in GTA 5 and GTA Online’s Doomsday Heist.

Michelle was assigned to find proof related to Niko’s criminal activities for Agent ULP to blackmail him into working for Agent ULP.

Before Niko moved to Liberty City, Michelle had also involved in criminal activities. Therefore, Michelle was forced into working for Agent ULP to get herself free from her past. Agent ULP would later reveal this when asked by Niko regarding the reward Michelle would get for completing her mission. Agent ULP then replied:

“We gave her her life back.”

Michelle’s Cameo Appearance in GTA 5

After completing her mission in monitoring Niko Bellic, Michelle climbed the ranks at the IAA. In GTA 5, Michelle makes an appearance with her real name, Karen Daniels, and looks like she holds an important position at the IAA. In the mission: Three’s Company, Michelle interrogates Mr. K in a room at the IAA building.

Aside from that, Michelle also makes several appearances during The Humane Labs Raid mission in GTA Online. In that mission, she has an important conversation with the GTA Online protagonists, indicating that she’s now a high-ranked IAA agent.

While Niko Bellic got his life miserable because of Michelle, Karen Daniels managed to restart her life with a clean slate and propelled her career at the IAA.
