The Hyuga Clan, Owners of The All-Seeing White Eyes Byakugan
The Hyuga Clan, owners of the Byakugan, kept the secret behind Hizashi’s death, and the Kumogakure conflict!
Anime & Manga | 03 January
In Naruto, The Hyuga Clan is a well-known ninja family in Konohagakure due to their dojutsu Byakugan; it gives the Hyugas the ability to see through and a near 360 degrees vision!
Despite having such powerful jutsu, the Hyuga Clan also kept a dark secret: a clash between clan members that splits the clan itself into two factions and also their conflict with Kumogakure. What happened actually? Let’s take a look at a brief history of the Hyuga Clan!
The Hyuga Clan is one of the four noble clans in Konohagakure and considered one of the strongest clans in the village. The prowess of this clan is still much remembered up to the point that in the Fourth Shinobi World War, a Kumogakure ninja said that they have been made overwhelmed by the clan during the previous war.
As the descendants of the Otsutsuki Clan, specifically from Hamura Otsutsuki’s lineage, they are inherited with a kekkei genkai, Byakugan which gives them several unique powers, such as a near 360 degrees vision, extended fields of vision, the ability to see through objects and read chakra circulatory system.
However, even that every member of the clan inherited the Byakugan and has physical characteristics with grey or white eyes, they have to undergo rigorous training in order to activate the real power of the dojutsu, and apparently, not all members of the clan could do it.
Besides that, they also have the ability to expel chakra from every tenketsu in their body as an offensive or defensive method with the taijutsu Juken a.k.a the Gentle Fist. They are able to incapacitate the opponents by cutting their chakra flows just by a gentle touch.
Politics in the Hyuga Clan
In order to keep the Byakugan secret from the people who want to steal it, the Hyuga Clan formed a rather complex internal political system; by dividing the family into two factions: the Main House and the Branch House, which are distinguished by birth order or heritage.
Members of the Main House manage the clan entirely, while members of the Branch House are tasked to protect it and branded with a cursed seal shown on their foreheads. These seals not only serve to secure the Byakugan when the owner is dead but also to give full control for the Main House over them, allowing the Main House to torture or even kill them just with a simple hand gesture.
That makes the Branch House feel treated as slaves with their freedom being restricted, although it was meant to keep the clan’s secrets, all the things relating to the division of the clan and the seal often triggered conflicts within the family.
The Hyuga Affair, the Kumogakure Conflict, and the Death of Hizashi
Speaking of the clan’s internal conflict and their abilities, there was once an incident that later known as the Hyuga Affair.
The incident occurred nine years before Naruto become a Genin, and Konohagakure was still at war with Kumogakure. In an effort to put an end to the conflict between the two villages, both parties agreed to sign a peace treaty (which coincided with Hinata Hyuga’s third birthday). But the Hyugas were unable to foresee Kumogakure’s evil plan. The treaty was revealed to just a cover used by the Head Ninja of Kumogakure in order to kidnap Hinata and obtain her Byakugan. Fortunately enough, the Kumo-nin’s plan was thwarted by Hiashi Hyuga -- which also killed the shinobi.
Denying all the accusations, Kumogakure even had the audacity to demand Hiashi as the murderer of the highest-ranked ninja of their village to be executed as the compensation and would bring his dead body, as the stipulations of the treaty.
Didn’t want his brother to die, and the secrets of Byakugan fell to the hands of the enemy, Hizashi Hyuga, the twin brother of Hiashi and the member of the Branch House, who was branded with the cursed seal decided to exchange his life despite Hiashi their father’s objections.
The incident remained in the memories of the high-ranks of Konohagakure ever since, taking it as a serious violation by the Kumogakure’s side.
