Genshin Impact’s developer is pressuring X (formerly known as Twitter) to disclose the identities of the X accounts responsible for leaking Genshin Impact updates before their official release. These accounts have been accused of unofficially sharing unreleased content.
Cognosphere, a subsidiary of MiHoYo, filed this request with the DMCA court in November 2023. The subpoena asked X to reveal the identities of four accounts: @FurinaaLover, @GIHutaoLover, @HutaoLoverGI, and @HutaoLover77.
The requested information includes the names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, and IP addresses of the account holders. Cognosphere believes that all four accounts are owned and managed by a single individual. These accounts have since been deleted from X.
Timeline of the Genshin Impact X Leaker Case
In January 2024, X refused to comply with Cognosphere's request, arguing that the DMCA subpoena was an attack on free speech and filed a motion to stop it.
On September 18, 2024, the DMCA court ruled against X, stating that the case did not involve free speech rights, as the issue was a matter of copyright infringement.
“The speech that triggered the DMCA subpoena in question is alleged to be a copyright violation” the court decision stated, as quoted from Dexerto.
“Since no First Amendment rights protect copyright infringement... no protected speech is at issue.”
The DMCA court also rejected X’s claim that Cognosphere failed to prove ownership of the leaked content. The court ordered X to disclose the names of the leakers.
“The court rejects [X]'s First Amendment objections to the DMCA subpoena issued by Cognosphere and therefore denies [X]'s motion to quash the subpoena” the ruling read.
Neither X nor MiHoYo has made an official statement about the case. For now, X is required to hand over the account holders' identities. However, the ruling could be void if both parties reach a settlement outside of court.
