Sauron is one of the most legendary villains in the fantasy world of Middle-earth, created by J.R.R. Tolkien. In The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, he becomes a major threat to Middle-earth. However, before becoming the Dark Lord, Sauron was known as Mairon, a being who originally had a more noble nature.

So, how did Mairon transform into Sauron, the symbol of evil in Middle-earth? Here's a discussion about Sauron’s lore, especially his true identity and original form.

Sauron Was Once Known as Mairon

Before becoming the feared evil figure, Sauron was known as Mairon, one of the Ainur, sacred beings created by Eru Ilúvatar. Mairon belonged to the Maia, a class of Ainur below the Valar, but still possessed great power. As Mairon, he was noble, wise, and skilled in order and structure.

Mairon, along with the other Ainur, was created by Eru Ilúvatar before the physical world existed, through the Music of the Ainur, a symphony that shaped Arda, the world where Middle-earth is located. In the Music of the Ainur, Mairon stood out with his expertise in managing complex harmonies, showcasing his intelligence.

As a Maia, Mairon initially served the Valar and contributed to shaping the world. However, his love for order and his desire to create a perfect world on his terms slowly opened a vulnerability in his heart. This was exploited by Morgoth, the rebellious Valar.

Mairon worked under Aulë, the Valar of craftsmanship and creation in Arda. Under Aulë’s guidance, Mairon mastered the arts and sciences, excelling in creating beautiful objects. However, his ambition to perfect everything and his desire for full control over the world led him down a dark path.

2. His Rebellion and Transformation into Sauron

The change of name from Mairon to Sauron marked a turning point in his life. His betrayal of the Valar and his decision to side with Morgoth were the beginnings of his transformation into one of Middle-earth's greatest antagonists.

The name Sauron comes from the Quenya language, meaning “The Abominable” or “The Terrible,” reflecting his drastic shift from a noble figure to a feared enemy.

Morgoth, formerly known as Melkor, was the most powerful Valar and the first rebel in Arda's history. Dissatisfied with the role given to him by Eru Ilúvatar, he sought to dominate Arda according to his will. Seeing great potential in Mairon, Morgoth began manipulating and enticing him to join his plans for domination.

Mairon, who had started doubting the Valar’s decisions, was drawn to Morgoth's vision of a world ruled by power and order. Morgoth promised him authority and the opportunity to realize his vision of a perfect world. Lured by these promises, Mairon eventually succumbed and joined Morgoth, abandoning the path of good and beginning his descent into darkness.

With his intelligence, Mairon became a valuable ally to Morgoth, helping devise strategies and create tools and weapons for the war against the Valar. During this time, Mairon adopted the name Sauron, symbolizing his full transformation into a malevolent figure. Together with Morgoth, Sauron created chaos in Arda, including during the War of Wrath, which devastated much of the world.

3. The One Ring: The Source of the Villain's Power

After Morgoth was defeated and exiled, Sauron took over as the main force of evil in Middle-earth. This marked his final transformation from a noble Maia into one of the most feared villains. Sauron became the symbol of darkness, spreading terror throughout Middle-earth.

The pinnacle of his transformation was the creation of The One Ring, which became his greatest source of power and the symbol of his ambition to dominate all of Middle-earth. Using the skills he learned from Aulë, Sauron forged the ring to control all the rings of power owned by the kings of men, elves, and dwarves.

The One Ring not only amplified Sauron’s power but also bound him to the physical world. As long as the ring existed, Sauron was nearly invincible. With the ring, he regained strength after Morgoth’s defeat, built a vast army, and spread fear throughout Middle-earth.

One of Sauron’s interesting abilities was his power to change form. As a Maia, he could take various physical shapes as needed. Initially, he often appeared in a beautiful and charming form, attracting many followers with his allure.

4. Nearly Conquering All of Middle-earth

Sauron’s power reached its peak during the War of the Ring, where he almost succeeded in conquering all of Middle-earth. However, when Frodo Baggins and his companions destroyed The One Ring, Sauron lost his main source of power. Without the ring, Sauron could no longer maintain his physical form and was ultimately vanquished, leaving Middle-earth free from his threat.

Despite this, Sauron's name remains a symbol of darkness and evil in the memories of Middle-earth's inhabitants. He is remembered as a warning of the dangers of unchecked ambition and the desire to dominate others.

Sauron’s transformation from the noble Mairon to the Dark Lord demonstrates how uncontrolled ambition can turn a good being into the most feared enemy in Middle-earth.

That’s the lore of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings that we can learn about together. The vastness of Sauron’s lore showcases J.R.R. Tolkien’s brilliance as a storyteller.
