Lucasfilm has officially released the debut trailer for the series Maul: Shadow Lord, marking a pivotal chapter in the history of the Star Wars franchise. Nearly three decades after his first appearance in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, the character of Darth Maul finally takes center stage in his own standalone television series. This release reaffirms the immense influence of the character within the Star Wars universe, redeeming a figure who was once considered to have been "killed off too soon" in the theatrical films.
Maul: Shadow Lord is set during the Dark Times, a grim era when the Galactic Empire was at the peak of its power. In this period, Darth Maul is depicted attempting to rebuild his criminal network in the galactic underworld while simultaneously seeking and training an apprentice. The latest trailer showcases a dark and brutal tone, focusing on intrigue, power struggles, and the intense action characteristic of the Star Wars criminal underworld.
The series is scheduled to premiere on April 6, 2026, with a format of two episodes per week, leading up to the finale on May 4, known globally as Star Wars Day. The trailer also introduces a new character named Devon Izara, a red-skinned, Force-sensitive Twi’lek. This figure is widely cited as a reinterpretation of Darth Talon, a legendary character from the Expanded Universe who was originally created based on George Lucas's own ideas as a potential apprentice for Maul.
In this new canon version, Maul's story takes a different direction from Lucas's initial plans. While Darth Talon was previously envisioned as Maul's apprentice in the post-original trilogy era, Maul: Shadow Lord places both of them right in the midst of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader’s dominance. The existence of Maul and his prospective apprentice poses a distinct threat to the Sith Rule of Two, opening up potential for dangerous internal conflict.
Significant changes are also visible in the character design of Devon Izara. Lucasfilm appears to have made significant adjustments compared to the older comic versions, which were often criticized for excessive depiction. This new approach is considered more aligned with the modern vision of Star Wars, which strives to present Twi’leks as complex characters rather than mere visual elements. With the release of this trailer, Maul: Shadow Lord promises a deep exploration of the galaxy's dark side that is rarely touched upon. The return of Darth Maul is not just nostalgia, but an opportunity to expand the Star Wars mythology through a darker, more intriguing perspective.
