Loot Boxes or Gacha system is an important feature in a game where players can get items, characters, or skills that are being offered. It is from Gacha that game developers reap so many profits, such as the best-selling miHoYo game at the moment, Genshin Impact.

Recently, in certain countries, there have been frequent discussions regarding the Gacha system in video games. Several countries in Europe, especially Belgium, have blocked the Gacha or Loot Box in some of the games. While on the Asian continent, the country that opposes this feature is currently Malaysia.

Penjabat Mufti Wilayah Persekutuan or the equivalent of the MUI (Majelis Ulama Indonesia) in Malaysia officially gave a statement via a Facebook post on its official page stating that Loot Boxes or Gacha in video games is "haram" or “forbidden”. They emphasized that what made the Gacha feature illegal was the service to buy items whose contents could only be known after the player had executed the transaction.

Mufti Malaysia further explained that it’s against Islamic law. This is because the Gacha system only relies on luck, or eliminating the buyer's right to be able to get something certain. They emphasized that the “haram” thing in the game only applies to microtransactions that are similar to Gacha or Loot Boxes while purchasing items in which the result are certain and according to the buyer’s wish, it won’t be a problem.
