Junji Ito is one of the most famous horror mangaka in the world. Most of his horror manga tell the fear of things that are commonplace for us to meet everyday but are developed in such a way that it becomes a story that is strange, scary, and gives us goosebumps. In addition, Junji Ito's horror manga also contains many elements of cosmic horror—where terror comes from an unknown origin and human existence in this world has no value at all.

There have been many manga—be it serialization or one-shot—that Junji Ito has created. But there are some manga made by him that are popular and too bad to be missed. What are those? Here are the 5 best horror manga recommendations made by Junji Ito that you shouldn't miss!

1. Uzumaki

The spiral shape (Japanese: Uzumaki) is unique. They are circular in shape, but have a line that rotates and seems to guide us to the center. This Uzumaki manga tells the story of a city that is terrorized by a spiral: causing strange events, beyond reason, scary and horrible.

The terrors presented in Uzumaki are all related to spiral-shaped objects. The terror itself can be said to be random and discontinuous. But this is what makes Uzumaki so difficult to predict. For those of you who want to dive into horror manga, especially manga made by Junji Ito, Uzumaki is a solid first manga to sample.

Uzumaki was adapted into a live-action movie, but we recommend reading the manga first because the manga is much better than the movie.

2. Gyo

Zombies in human form are common. What would happen if the zombies were fish and terrible creatures from the bottom of the sea? Gyo tells the story of fish infected with a mysterious machine that attaches to their bodies so they can walk on land. This engine is controlled by a foul smelling gas which is a death gas. In the end, it's not just fish that get infected by these engines and gases—humans can get infected too.

Gyo creates a fresh zombie story. The scene where fish from all over the world's seas start to appear and terrorize human civilization is one of the most iconic scenes in this manga. The manga itself has been adapted into an anime movie. But again, we prefer to just read the manga because the story in the anime is different from the manga—and the manga is far superior.

3. Tomie

A beautiful female student named Tomie died tragically during summer vacation. Surprisingly, when entered the new semester, Tomie came to school in good health as if nothing had happened. This raises a big question mark for her school friends as well as the teachers. As the story progresses, Tomie's mysterious appearance causes tragedy and spreads madness to those around her.

In the Tomie series, Tomie is the personification of jealousy, envy, and jealousy. Her existence made the people around her fall into madness with jealousy and envy to the point that they kill each other. Tomie was almost unkillable. Every part of her body will grow into a new Tomie and even the parts of her body that are attached to the human body will slowly take over the human body and turn it into a new Tomie.

Tomie has a very good concept and each story has a pretty good storyline. Imagining Tomie really exists and is near us will make the hairs on our necks goosebumps.

4. The Enigma of Amigara Fault

The Enigma of Amigara Fault is a short story (one shot) by Junji Ito. This manga tells about a mysterious earthquake that causes a hole to form in one of the mountains.

The hole is not an ordinary hole. They are human and nothing is the same as one another. Each hole is reserved for one person and seems to be whispering that person to enter it. Once in, those people will not be able to return. They must move straight ahead following the direction of the hole that is getting more and more deformed. The fear of the dark and claustrophobia gives the readers goosebumps when reading this manga.

5. Hellstar Remina

Perhaps, of all the manga made by Junji Ito, Hellstar Remina is the manga that is closest to the literal term cosmic horror. This manga tells of a scientist who finds an object in outer space—later named Remina. This discovery was greeted with joy by everyone until they finally realized that Remina was a moving and… living planet.

Remina moves closer to planet Earth, creating madness, panic and chaos for all of humanity. Every planet and star that Remina passed through was devoured by her. Remina herself eventually reached Earth. The efforts of governments from various countries to dispel Remina with nuclear bombs were in vain. Earth becomes a toy like a lollipop by Remina.

This manga really gives goosebumps to imagine that there is a creature much larger than planet Earth about to devour Earth—and the scariest thing about it is that this can happen at any time. The human point of view when Remina licks the Earth is one of the interesting things to read.
