In case you’re unfamiliar with the term, manhwa is the Korean term for comics and print cartoons from South Korea. Unlike Japanese manga, manhwa are usually colored and exclusively available online. That may also be the reason why so many manhwa series are gaining popularity among comic fans recently. South Korean comics had an interesting growth since the early manhwa series were released on webtoon or webcomics back in 2003, they began to grow, from the increasingly diverse storylines, unique style & characters, to brand-new, never-before-seen plotlines.
Among the various genres, the action genre is certainly one of the most popular among the manhwa series. With that in mind, on this occasion, Dunia Games would like to give you a list of 12 recommended action manhwa that you should read as they are just as exciting as Japanese manga.
1. Solo Leveling
The action manhwa by Jang Sung Lak tells the journey of Sung Jin-Woo, an E-ranked hunter. He’s certainly not the best given that his nickname is the 'World's Weakest'. But one day, he’s left behind by his group and about to die in a dungeon. But somehow, he gained a new ability that helped him progress significantly quicker.
Solo Leveling has a fast-paced storyline, it doesn’t drag out, with a dynamic plot and exciting actions for you to follow. Sung Jin-Woo’s character arc is also something that’s fascinating to follow. It’s no wonder that to this day, this manhwa series remains the most popular.
2. Tower of God
Created by Lee Jong Hui (SIU), this comic follows the journey of Baam, a young man who lives alone without the presence of anyone else aside from Rachel. She’s the only girl that Baam cares about as he doesn’t want anything in this life but to continue to live alongside Rachel. One day, Rachel goes to the mysterious tower known as the 'Tower of God'. Baam begs Rachel not to leave him, but Rachel insists, leaving Bam frustrated and eventually follows her to the 'Tower of God'.
Since then Baam’s journey begins as he meets various kinds of people with different kinds of goals of climbing the tower. His uninvited presence in the tower is what makes the story exciting as he continues to search for Rachel.
3. Noblesse
The manhwa series that’s just as popular as Tower of God follows a powerful vampire from the Noble race named Cadis Etrama Di Raizel (also known as Rai) who just woke up from his 820-year-long sleep without knowing about mankind’s development. He woke up in an abandoned building, trying to adapt to modern life. He starts living a new life as an ordinary high school student where he meets his loyal servant, Frankenstein. However, his peaceful life meets an abrupt end as various disturbances and attacks from a secret group that called themselves the "Unions". This manhwa series is written by Jeho Son and illustrated by Kwangsu Lee.
4. Lookism
This manhwa series may sound familiar to you. Lookism follows a high school student, Park Hyung Suk, who always gets bullied for being visually unattractive. He’s always the butt of jokes, the victim of violence and bullying. One day, Hyung Suk wakes up from his sleep, finding himself sleeping while his consciousness is in a different body. Park Hyung Suk wakes up with a handsome face, an athletic body, and a beautiful voice. All of that completely change Park Hyung Suk.
Created by Park Tae Joon, this manhwa was first published in November 2014 and has gained tremendous popularity with each of its episodes to this day. Aside from the fun side of high school life, this manhwa also features the dark side of a teenager’s life that involves crimes and bullying.
5. Windbreaker
This sports-action manhwa tells the story of Ja Hyun, a brilliant student and the student council president, who hides a different version of himself that comes up when he rides his bike. Due to his excellent cycling skills, he’s forced to join the school’s cycling team, the Hummingbird Crew. He then feels that he’s discovering a new world outside of his academic life. Windbreaker follows Ja Hyun’s journey with his crew in winning amateur bike races and the mystery behind the death of his uncle. This manhwa is a street drama that revolves around a teenager who longs for freedom.

6. Nano Machine
Nano Machine is a manhwa that was originally based on a novel by Han Joong Wueol Ya, which was then rewritten in the form of a webcomic by Great H alongside GGBG as the illustrator. This manhwa follows Cheon Yeo Woon, an orphan who grew up in the Demonic Cult. He obtains nanotechnology from his descendants from the future. With the high-tech nanomachine embedded in his body, he finds his martial art skills significantly amplified as he starts to climb the ladders in the sect.
This manhwa is an exciting series as it combines traditional elements with advanced technology. With the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in his body, Yeo Woon is able to analyze the situations he finds himself in and learn limitless knowledge. 7. Gosu (The Master)
Written by Ryu Ki Woon and illustrated by Moon Jung Hoo, this manhwa first became a series on Naver Webtoon in September 2015. The word 'gosu' is a Korean term used to refer to a highly-skilled individual. It follows a young man named Gang Ryong, who’s trained by his master to exact his revenge. However, when he’s about to avenge his master, he learns that the people who betrayed his master have already died.
This comic features so many high-level combats that are sometimes illogical, yet the story and actions in it are still exciting. This series also has comedic elements, so you’ll get some laughs from reading it. Another interesting point of this manhwa is that it has an unexpected twist even before the main story begins. You have to read the series to find more surprises.
8. Volcanic Age
Based on the light novel by Jung Joon Shin, Volcanic Age was originally known as Hwasan Age or Mount Hua Reincarnation. It follows Joo Seo Cheon, who survived the war and became an elder in the Hwasan clan at the time. However, at the end of his life, he regretted that he didn’t live a full life, and then he receives a second chance to go back to the past through reincarnation.
Volcanic Age is one of several manhwa series that revolve around wuxia, and it's quite popular and has been running for quite some time. Joo Seo Cheon’s story has an interesting plot, especially when he uses his knowledge from his past life to solve conflicts.
9. Chronicles of Heavenly Demon
Created by Il Hwang and Gom Guk, this webcomic tells the story of Hyun Wook Seong, who gets a second chance to realize his dream of becoming a warrior in a Demonic Cult. He uses his second chance to seek knowledge to exact his revenge. In his previous life, he and his master, who were both in the Spear Master Sect fell victim to a martial art conspiracy. They were accused of learning dark arts and were killed by other warriors. You may find that this manhwa is rather slow-paced yet the actions are top-notch.
10. The Beginning After The End
Written by Turtle Me, The Beginning After The End follows King Grey who has unrivaled powers and wealth in a world governed by martial skills. One day, King Grey makes a mistake and gets assassinated. King Grey then receives a chance to be reincarnated as a child named Arthur Lewin from the common family of Lewin. In this story, you’ll find out how King Grey was reincarnated and given a second chance to amend his mistakes while figuring out his role in his new life.
11. Ranker Who Lives A Second Time
This series follows Cha Yeon Woo who seeks to avenge his lost twin brother after being betrayed by his colleagues. After missing for 5 years, Yeon Woo learns that his twin brother has died. When he’s cleaning up his brother’s belongings, he finds a pocket watch that he gave him as a gift. Upon opening the watch, he hears his brother’s voice, telling him that for the last 5 years, he’s been stranded in another world where he got betrayed and killed.
After learning about the truth, Yeon Woo gets furious and swears to avenge his dead brother, and decides to enter the Obelisk, the Tower of Sun God, to learn about his brother’s whereabouts. Right there, he begins to develop his skills by hunting monsters just what his brother’s journal tells him to.
12. The Great Mage Returns After 4000 Years
Written by Barnacle, this series follows the worst student at the Westroad Academy, Frey Blake. A boy who’s tired of his painful life, and eventually decides to end his life. One day, a new soul enters Frey Blake’s lifeless body. The empty vessel gets possessed by 'The Great Mage' Lucas Trowman, a hero who receives a second chance to seek revenge using Frey’s body.
The story revolves around the legendary mage who’s just got reincarnated after being caged for 4000 years, taking over Frey’s body. Lucas is determined to once again reach the highest level of mastery and seek his revenge.
