Why Riot Didn’t Make ARAM Map Rotation Permanent — Yet
If you're a loyal player of the All Random All Mid (ARAM) mode in League of Legends, you probably remember the moment when Riot Games surprised the community with two new maps: Butcher’s Bridge and Koeshin’s Crossing. These maps were introduced randomly as part of the ARAM map rotation system—and they were met with overwhelming excitement. Many players even hoped Riot would make the feature permanent.
Unfortunately, the rotation system was only available for a limited time. This raised a major question in the community: Why didn’t Riot make ARAM map rotation permanent? Thankfully, Riot addressed this directly in a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session, where they discussed the future of ARAM and the map rotation experiment.
According to Riot Cadmus, the Modes Lead, Riot is very open to the idea of making map rotation a permanent feature. The introduction of new maps brought fresh energy to ARAM and made gameplay feel more dynamic and enjoyable for many players.
However, Riot is also realistic. The classic Howling Abyss map is deeply tied to ARAM’s identity. It’s the core of the mode’s experience, and altering it too drastically could alienate long-time players who are used to the traditional setup. That’s why Riot is carefully analyzing community feedback, map frequency preferences, and player comfort before making any permanent changes.
Several ideas have already been suggested by the community, including:
-
Giving Howling Abyss a higher appearance rate so it remains the dominant map.
-
Introducing a vote or filter system to let players choose their preferred map.
-
Making map rotation a recurring event rather than a permanent feature.
One thing is clear: Riot is listening. And while the future of ARAM’s map variety is still uncertain, the response to this rotation event shows there’s real demand for more diversity—even in the most casual mode of League of Legends.
