Monster Hunter Wilds has been generating significant buzz even in its early previews, particularly for its expansive map. While players worldwide have only experienced a small portion of the world through the open beta, it’s already apparent that the game will offer a vast and immersive environment. The map in Monster Hunter Wilds is set to be one of the most seamless and interactive landscapes in the Monster Hunter series, and its size and design promise a rich exploration experience.
Yuya Tokuda, the director of Monster Hunter Wilds (and Monster Hunter World before it), shed light on the scale and design of the map during a recent interview with Screen Rant.
While Tokuda refrained from revealing precise details about the map’s exact size or the number of biomes, he confirmed that Monster Hunter Wilds will be similar in size to recent entries in the franchise, such as Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise. Despite the game's greater focus on detailed, interactive environments, Tokuda assured fans that the map would retain the same level of volume as past titles.
A key aspect of the game's map design is its dedication to serving the monsters that inhabit it. Tokuda explained that the monsters' ecology is deeply tied to the environments they live in.
This connection between monster behavior and environmental design has led to the creation of various unique biomes that will make each area feel distinct. According to Tokuda, the map’s primary role is to support the creatures that players will hunt, ensuring that each monster is placed in an environment suited to its behavior and characteristics.
Early previews of Monster Hunter Wilds have already provided a glimpse of the game’s diverse landscapes. The open beta began in a sprawling desert, where players pursued monsters across treacherous dunes and sinkholes. Additional trailers showcased the lush yet dangerous Scarlet Forest, home to the giant arachnid, Lala Barina, along with its vibrant, ruddy trees and mysterious watery caves.
In terms of gameplay, the Monster Hunter Wilds map seems poised to offer more than just a visual feast. The open beta revealed increased interactivity within the map, such as the ability to manipulate environmental elements like pulling flying creatures into a swirling sinkhole to disrupt their movements. Tokuda has hinted that players can expect a "very different experience" in each biome, suggesting that environmental interactions will play a significant role in how players approach hunting and exploration.
Moreover, Monster Hunter Wilds will feature an immersive plot, more integral to the gameplay than in previous titles. Tokuda shared that the game’s narrative will unfold alongside the player’s exploration, with the story providing deeper context to the ecology and design of the various environments. Unlike earlier entries, where the plot often took a backseat to the hunting mechanics, Monster Hunter Wilds will weave its storyline directly into the gameplay, offering an enriched experience where the environment's design ties closely to the unfolding narrative.
In terms of scale, while the game may not be vastly larger than its predecessors, it’s clear that the level of detail and the variety of biomes will create a sprawling world that feels vast and alive. The open beta already showcased four main monsters, Chatacabra, Doshaguma, Balahara, and the hidden Rey Dau each tied to different areas of the map. This variety of creatures and environments promises a dynamic hunting experience, where no two encounters will be alike.
