The latest console in the Xbox family, Xbox Series X, is now officially launched on November 10th, 2020. This Microsoft-made console offers optimum hardware performance by supporting a high FPS (framerate per second), 8k resolution, real-time ray-tracing, and high-performance SSD to decrease the loading time. Before experiencing what Xbox Series X has to offer, find out the history of Xbox from 2001 to today here.
1st Generation: Xbox
The first Xbox console was released in November 2001 in the United States and became the first console made by Microsoft. The name “Xbox” is driven from “DirectX Box” that inspired by API graphics made by the Microsoft company, DirectX. At that time, Xbox came into the video game console market as the rival of PlayStation 2 (Sony) and GameCube (Nintendo).
With a price of US$299 when it first released, Xbox offers a high graphics quality above its competitors by using a 733 MHz Intel Pentium III processor which has a performance similar to that of PC. A few popular games like Halo: Combat Evolved, Project Gotham Racing, and Dead or Alive 3, supported the popularity of the console, but still unable to beat PlayStation 2 back then. Microsoft ended the console’s production in 2005, with a sales record of 24 million units until 2006.
2nd Generation: Xbox 360, Xbox 360 S, and Xbox 360 E
Xbox 360 was released in November 2005, in the same year as the production termination of the previous console. Again, the second generation of Microsoft’s Xbox fought against Sony and Nintendo’s console, named PlayStation 3 and Wii, respectively. There are two versions of Xbox 360 released to the market; Xbox 360 S (2010) and Xbox 360 E (2013), that offer various tweaks on the design and specs.
During the first year of this console’s release, Xbox 360 came with best-seller titles such as Call of Duty 2, Gears of War, and Halo 3. With a price of US$399, this console was a best-seller almost everywhere except in Japan that dominated by domestic products. As of June 2013, more than 78,2 units of Xbox 360 were sold, before it was stopping production in 2016.

3rd Generation: Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X
Xbox One came in November 2013 as the rival of PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Wii U. This console offered various internet-based features like recording and gameplay stream to watch cable TV and satellite channels. Similar to Xbox 360, Xbox One also released in various versions, namely Xbox One S (2016) and Xbox One X (2017), in which the two offer Ultra HD gaming experience and 4K resolution.
With a prize of US$499, Xbox One is worth it enough to have due to the stylish appearance, multimedia features, and built-in voice navigation feature. A few games that supported this console’s popularity are The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Red Dead Redemption 2, to online multiplayer games like Apex Legends, Overwatch, and Fortnite. Even so, Xbox One was very criticized because it lacks exclusive games compared to those in PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
4th Generation: Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S
Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S become the latest console in the Xbox Family that was released on November 10th, 2020. And yet again, this console’s release is compared to the rival, PlayStation 5. Surprisingly, these two consoles are released in the same month, only differ in 2 days. Surely many console gamers compare which console that is more worth it to own. With Xbox Series X that can be purchased for US$499 as the introductory price, Microsoft offers a more powerful performance than Xbox One X that supports up to 8K and 120 fps. On the other hand, Xbox Series S offers the low-end version which supports 1440p resolution to 4K and 60 fps with a price of US$299, which also more convenient in the wallet. Learning from the past mistake, now, Microsoft promised more exclusive games for Xbox Series X and Series S, including Halo Infinite, Forza Motorsports, to Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2.
