Kena: Bridge of Spirits is an indie game that was released exclusively (for the time being) for PlayStation 4 and 5. The game is highly anticipated by many fans due to the stunning graphics that are reminiscent of PIXAR animations. And, as it turns out, the game actually has an Indonesian voice actor. She is Dewa Ayu Dewi Larasati, the voice of Kena, the main character of the game.

In its latest blog post, the developer of the game, Ember Lab, explains that Kena is Ayu’s debut as a voice actor. However, the post also mentions that her mother, Emiko, is also a professional voice actor, and coached Ayu to voice Kena.

Ayu is a dancer and singer of the gamelan group Cundamani, which was founded by her father, Dewa Putu Berata. Cundamani also collaborated with Jason Gallaty for the music scoring in the game.

Our biggest similarities are perseverance and our connections to our fathers. Kena works hard to overcome challenges and succeeds in helping others while drawing from the experiences of her father and always referring to him lovingly,” Ayu said in regards to her connection with Kena.

Ayu also mentioned that she and Kena share some characteristics and even features as people say that Ayu is a copy of Kena. Ember Lab mentioned that the connection between Ayu and Kena was magical since the beginning, which brings authenticity to her performance.

Ayu also recalls her first experience getting into the recording booth while performing “effort sounds for the game. Ayu mentioned that she had to get cramped into the little booth.

I kept hitting the microphone with my head, or the wall of the booth with my arm, or running into the little table with my script. It was hilarious! It was definitely a workout but it was so much fun!” she said about her experience.

The post also says that Ayu is a fan of Mario Kart — which shows that she already had an interest in gaming before joining the voice cast.

Aside from the blog post, Ember Lab also released a new video on its YouTube channel. The video explains how the Grier brothers, Josh and Mike, began their journey from being visual effect artists to creators of Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

The video also features some footage of the music scoring that took place in Bali. And, they also explain how Ayu, who’s never been a voice actor before, got chosen to be the voice of Kena.
