It's not Mark Hamill who starred as Luke Skywalker or Harrison Ford who played as Han Solo, but we will talk about George Lucas, the man who introduced Star Wars movie to the world.
Behind the Creation of Star Wars
Who doesn't know this phenomenal film of all time called Star Wars? This science-fiction movie is known with various iconic characters like Darth Vader, Princess Leia, and a capsule-shaped robot named R2-D2, and certainly not separated from the history of the creator himself, George Lucas. Behind the successful movie of his, there is a sad story behind the development of the first Star Wars movie as reported by Goalcast.
George Lucas said that the process of making Star Wars into a movie was not an easy task back then. He had to write the script by himself and trying to offer it to various movie studios to be produced like major other films. Sadly, no studio wanted to produce his movie because science fiction was only for kids and didn’t suitable for adults.
Young Lucas didn’t give up easily and kept finding a producer who wanted to fund the project until he found a movie producer who wanted to pay for the first Star Wars movie. Even though the man didn’t like the storyline, the producer thought that Star Wars movie was a movie for segmented audiences who loved futuristic movies.
After a deal to produce Star Wars didn’t mean it was a good sign for young Lucas. He realized the budget was so small and forced Lucas to cut his paycheck for 300% for his dream movie and finally Star Wars movie was made with makeshift funds.
Since the beginning of the production, it was destined to fail because of many reasons, starting from the unavailability of visual effect artist in Hollywood and forcing Lucas to create his visual effect studio, injured crew, to damaged properties and electronic devices.
Heavy Storm Destroyed the Property
In the first week of filming, all set was destroyed due to the heavy storm. Penniless, Lucas didn’t give up to make his dream movie to see the daylight. He started to collect the leftover properties and recycle them from other movies. Lucas also must strive every day for Star Wars because all the crew didn’t want to take overtime at all because they hated the movie they currently worked on.
Not only having troubles on the crew, but even the actors also said that the movie won’t succeed. Lucas still insisted on his vision and keep on fighting to distribute Star Wars on the big screen. Later, he also must pay to create the opening credits just like he wanted and decided to resign from his work. As a result, Lucas started to get stressed and almost hopeless.
The failure of the Star Wars movie started to get bigger and near disaster. Nobody understood George Lucas’ vision because he was an introvert who troubled to express himself. Lucas decided to postpone the release date because the first version didn’t match with his vision and he recreated the scene, making the production cost inflated up to 40%. Along the way, he faced many obstacles like an injured actor and it's impossible to reshoot to the studio didn’t know how to sell Star Wars movie and didn’t want to try at all.
Finally, on May 25, 1977, the first Star Wars movie released for the first time but only on 35 selected theaters as well as the worst day to release a movie. But the result was beyond expectation, as Star Wars was a massive success and later nominated as the biggest box office at that time and became a movie that produced millions of Dollars.
43 years after it was born, the Star Wars movie series has become one of the influential movie series in the world. This series no more regarded as a sci-fi movie at all but also the most influential pop culture.
So that’s the inspirational story of George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars who never gives up. From his story above, we can take a lesson that we have to focus on things that you hoped for and the result will bloom when the time is right. In the end, never give up on your dreams!
