Meta Closes Several Game Studios, What's the Chronology?
Meta is closing three major VR game studios, including the makers of Asgard's Wrath, to focus on wearables.

Shocking news has emerged from the tech giant that has been vigorously promoting the vision of a virtual future. Meta has officially confirmed the difficult decision to shut down three game development studios under its umbrella. The studios directly affected by this policy are Armature Studio, Sanzaru Games, and Twisted Pixel. This drastic step follows circulating reports regarding a massive restructuring within the company, specifically in the Reality Labs division. The division, which has been the backbone of hardware and virtual reality software development, is reportedly set to cut more than 1,000 jobs.
The decision to close these studios is not without cause. A Meta spokesperson clarified that the company is undertaking a significant shift in investment strategy. While their ambition was previously fully centered on the Metaverse ecosystem, that focus is now being diverted to the Wearables segment, or wearable technology. The funds saved from these studio closures and employee reductions are planned to be reinvested. The goal is to support the accelerated growth and innovation of their wearable products throughout this year. This change in direction serves as a strong signal that Meta's priority regarding exclusive VR game content is beginning to shift.
The loss of Sanzaru Games might be the hardest blow for loyal fans of the Oculus platform. Acquired in February 2020, this studio made massive contributions through their flagship title, Asgard’s Wrath, and its highly ambitious sequel, Asgard’s Wrath 2. Before diving completely into the VR world, Sanzaru held a respectable reputation in the traditional console era. They were known for their collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment in working on Secret Agent Clank as well as the Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time collection. Not only that, but they also handled iconic franchises owned by SEGA through titles like Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal and Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice.
An equally tragic fate has befallen Armature Studio and Twisted Pixel, two studios that were acquired simultaneously in October 2022. Armature Studio briefly captured the gaming world's attention with their success in developing the virtual reality version of Resident Evil 4. The quality of the port received much praise, but unfortunately, the studio did not manage to release any other new games under the Meta banner post-acquisition. Previously, they were also known for Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate and Where the Heart Leads. Meanwhile, Twisted Pixel, famous for its unique gameplay style during the Xbox 360 era via ‘Splosion Man and Ms. Splosion Man, contributed through Marvel’s Deadpool VR before finally being forced to close its doors.
