Windows 11 is the latest OS from Microsoft. With the fresh look it offers, many are interested to get this OS. Yet unfortunately, not everyone can install Windows 11 on their device due to the TPM 2.0 requirement.
Given the fact that many have this issue, Microsoft came up with a way to install Windows 11 without the TPM 2.0. However, before we delve deeper, perhaps you need to know a bit about TPM 2.0.
What’s TPM 2.0?
TPM, short for Trusted Platform Module, is a chip that stores important info (encryption key and credentials) such as usernames and passwords. TPM can be found on the motherboard or processor.
TPM 2.0 support is only available on recently released hardware. This means, older PC don’t have TPM 2.0 support.
According to Winpoin.com, the reason why it requires TPM 2.0 support is that this chip plays an important role in the security authentication process for Windows 11 -- such as Windows Hello and BitLocker. Whereas its other function is to serve as an additional wall of security for Intel or AMD processors.
How to Install Windows 11 without TPM 2.0
Due to the number of users who can’t upgrade their devices to Windows 11, Microsoft has come up with an alternative for them. This method can also be found on the official page at support.microsoft.com.
On that page, Microsoft mentions that you don’t need TPM 2.0. However, you need to activate TPM 1.2, which is the older version. Here’s how to activate it:
To check whether or not you have your TPM activated, press Win+r and type in tpm.msc. You will see your TPM version in the lower right corner as shown below.
How to Install Windows 11 with TPM 1.2
It’s not too complicated to install Windows 11 using TPM 1.2, but you’ll have to make more effort than those who already have TPM 2.0-enabled devices. Here are the steps:
- Press Win+r and type in regedit to get you to registry editor;
- Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup;
- Right-click on the white page (main panel), and select DWORD (32-bit) Value;
- Change the name to AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU and the value to 1.
After doing these steps, you can start to install Windows 11, with a side note that your hardware has to meet the following requirements:
- Processor: 1 GHz or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC);
- Memory: 4 GB RAM;
- Storage: 64 GB or larger storage device;
- System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable.
