This year's 49th issue of Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine revealed on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, that Yuki Sato's manga Tomodachi Game (Friends Games) is getting an anime adaptation in April 2022. The official Twitter account for Tomodachi Game anime has been opened, and reveals the cast, staff, and visual artwork.

The cast includes Chiaki Kobayashi as Yuichi Katagiri, Daiki Hamano as Tenji Mikasa, and Yume Miyamoto as Shiho Sawaragi. Also present were Tomohiro Ono as Makoto Shibe and Satomi Amano as Yutori Kokorogi.

Hirofumi Ogura (Cells at Work!, Black Butler II) is directing Tomodachi Game at studio Okuru to Noboru, and Kenta Ihara (Saga of Tanya the Evil, Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-) is supervising and writing the scripts. Satomi Miyazaki designed the characters. Si Man Wei (Edens Zero) from Studio Tulip is the art director, and Tsukasa Ohira (No Game, No Life) from Studio Tulip is in charge of the art setting.

Aiko Mizuno (Cells at Work!) is the color key artist. Yomogiko Murano (Attack on Titan The Final Season, Kono Oto Tomare!: Sounds of Life) is the compositing director of photography. MICHIRU (BEM, Ascendance of a Bookworm) is in charge of composing the music. Hiroto Morishita (Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU) is the sound director at Studio Mouse.

Tomodachi Game will premiere on Nippon TV and BS Nippon TV.

The story, based on Mikoto Yamaguchi's original concept, follows Yuichi Katagiri, a young man with a perfect school life with four friends who live difficult lives. His peaceful everyday life comes to an end when the 2 million yen for his school trip expenses is suddenly lost. The puzzle unfolds when Yuichi gets caught up in a mysterious game that can win money. He must decide whether friendship or money is more important to him.

Sato (Sherlock Bones, Yokai Doctor) launched the manga in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in December 2013. The Tomodachi Game manga went on hiatus in December 2019, then re-published a chapter in February 2020, and then went on hiatus again. The manga entered its final arc in August 2020.

Kodansha published the 18th volume of the Tomodachi Game manga on June 9, 2021, and will publish the 19th volume on November 9, 2021.

The manga has inspired two live-action films. The first film, titled Tomodachi Game Gekijoban, was released in June 2017 after the live-action drama series premiered in April 2017. The second film premiered in Japan in September 2017. Do you think the story of Tomodachi Game is similar to the story of Squid Game?
