GTA San Andreas Bigfoot Mystery: From Hoax To Legend
Meskipun tidak pernah ada di GTA San Andreas, Bigfoot bisa menjadi ikon terbesar GTA Series
Grand Theft Auto | 11 October
GTA San Andreas is never short of mysteries for fans to discuss. Some of them have been solved, some will never be solved as they’re simply hoaxes. One of them is the mystery regarding the existence of Bigfoot, and many fans have been spending years to find Bigfoot in GTA San Andreas.
Although it’s been confirmed to be an utter hoax, over time, Bigfoot has become one of the most iconic things in the GTA Series. Due to the magnitude of the mythical creature, Bigfoot became part of the Los Santos flag in GTA V.
But that’s not all, in any of Rockstar’s major titles released after GTA San Andreas, players can find numerous references to Bigfoot. So, how did Bigfoot reach its status as a legend even though Rockstar has never brought Bigfoot into life in GTA San Andreas? Well, let’s get into it.
The Emergence of the Bigfoot Myth
Back when GTA San Andreas was first released in 2004, Rockstar also added a small piece of paper with each copy of the game. It’s Rockstar’s way to show their gratitude for everyone who helped the making of GTA San Andreas. The thank-you note also mentions “Big Foot”, which then fans interpreted as a confirmation for the existence of Bigfoot in the game.
Whereas in fact, GTA Vice City also has the same note that mentions Big Foot.
Furthermore, on Mount Chiliad, players can also find three sets of gigantic footprints. Aside from Mount Chiliad, these footprints can also be found in several other areas. This gave fans reasons to discover Bigfoot. Some claim that they’ve spotted Bigfoot in the woods, yet no one can provide any convincing evidence. So far, the pieces of evidence are completely made up using mods or edited using Photoshop or other programs.
The search for Bigfoot continues with more and more fans hopping on the bandwagon. Eventually, the rumors of Bigfoot’s existence in the game have turned into a big thing among fans. It even became more famous than the Hot Coffee case, which made Rockstar lose millions of dollars. To this day, there are still fans searching for Bigfoot in the game.
The Rampant Hoax Regarding Bigfoot’s Existence
Due to the magnitude of the Bigfoot rumors, Rockstar eventually came up with a response to this myth. In an official interview, the CEO of Rockstar, Terry Donovan, gave his take on the myth:
“There is no bigfoot, just like in real life.”
Yet after that, Terry Donovan’s statement has been embellished by some people. They added a line to his statement:
“There is no bigfoot, just like in real life. But there is something in the woods.”
The made-up line is what maintained the fans’ curiosity. It sparked new myths such as the existence of Leatherface and even the Panopticon Tragedy.
The whole situation rendered fans even more puzzled. Because, at that time, there’s also an interview with Rockstar’s President, Sam Houser. In that interview, Sam Houser stated:
“I did in fact put Bigfoot in the game which was meant as a joke but my boss told me to remove it. Instead, I didn't tell my boss and kept Bigfoot in the game just in case testers decided to roam the woods. Players will have a 1/10 chance of finding Bigfoot.”
As it turns out, what Sam Houser said was actually a mere hoax. As a matter of fact, Sam Houser never made such a statement.
There’s a blog posted back in 2006 owned by a journalist who attended the 2006 E3. The journalist had the opportunity to interview Terry Donovan, Sam Houser, and Dan Houser, who were the speakers at the time. Asked about the Bigfoot mystery in GTA San Andreas, one of the executives said:
“I mentioned the whole bigfoot debacle, and they laughed at that too. They mentioned that they do love what the community comes up with sometimes, and they leave it alone to see how it’s resolved.”
Since there were some interviews that have been altered by some people, fans weren’t sure which source they should believe. But ultimately, some of them were still trying to search for Bigfoot in GTA San Andreas.
Rockstar’s Parody of the Bigfoot Enthusiasts
On an in-game site in GTA IV called Lies Damn Lies, players can find a comment from the bisa ditemukan sebuah komentar dari suatu akun account “Big Foot” based in Los Santos. This account seems to refer to the name “Big Foot” mentioned in the thank-you note, which was probably just someone’s nickname. Not the mythical Bigfoot some fans believe to exist in GTA San Andreas.
Six years after GTA San Andreas, Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption and the Undead Nightmare DLC. In this DLC, there’s an achievement that players can unlock by killing a Bigfoot.
The Six Years in The Making achievement is a reference to the time some fans have been obsessing over Bigfoot from the release of GTA San Andreas (2004) to RDR Undead Nightmare (2010). Some fans even still continue to search for the mythical beast to this day.
However, in the French release, the achievement is translated to “Plus la peine de chercher, CJ”, which can be translated into “No more searching, CJ”.
In GTA V, Rockstar also added Bigfoot. In the Stranger & Freaks mission titled The Last One, Franklin encounters a hunter in Raton Canyon. The hunter claims that he’s been spending eight hours searching for Bigfoot, which refers to the Bigfoot hunters (namely some of the fans) in GTA San Andreas.
That’s because the hunter seems to share the same things that the Bigfoot enthusiasts of GTA San Andreas believe in. They claim that they’ve spotted Bigfoot in the woods, yet have never succeeded to capture the beast.
When Franklin finally manages to capture the mythical creature, it turns out that it’s just a person. Meaning that some fans have been spending eight years looking for Bigfoot, which was nothing based on a hoax. Much like the Bigfoot in GTA San Andreas, which turned out to be just a mod.
Will Bigfoot Ever Make an Appearance in GTA San Andreas?
Bigfoot has undoubtedly become one of the biggest icons in the GTA Series. From appearing on the Los Santos flag, The Last One mission, to a cameo where the player can turn into one in GTA V after consuming all of the Peyote Plants. Rockstar also seems to love the idea of Bigfoot as a symbol that represents the fans’ dedication to the lore in GTA San Andreas and the entire GTA Series.
Recently, the GTA community discovered leaks related to the GTA Trilogy Remastered files on Rockstar Games Launcher. Among these files, they found several achievements for GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition. Specifically, in GTA San Andreas, there’s a Bigfoot footprint achievement icon, as shown above. Is this a sign that Rockstar has accepted the idea of adding Bigfoot in GTA San Andreas? Let’s see.
