God of War is the work of Santa Monica Studio that offers a thrilling story, great character development, and stunning gameplay. In God of War, the players witnessed Kratos’ journey through conflicts in unexpected places.
But behind the intriguing story of Kratos’ journey, there are many unsolved mysteries in God of War. Those mysteries raise questions for the fans. Even the creator Cory Balrog can’t fully answer them other than asking the fans to wait for the next God of War game.
What are the mysteries in God of War? Find out below.
1. Kratos’ Journey to the Norse Mythology
Remember when Kratos tried to kill himself by stabbing himself with an Olympus sword? This was done by Kratos after he realized that he no longer had any reason to live. However, Athena who was angry and disappointed with Kratos finally pulled the sword and left him. At the end of the scene, players can see the place where Kratos’ body was placed, but there’s no trace of his body. There are only traces of blood leading to the high seas indicating that Kratos is still alive.
Until in God of War (2018), Kratos is said to have grown old and has moved to Norse Mythology. Surely many are wondering, how did Kratos get to Norse Mythology and have a family there? Of course, it would be very interesting if Santa Monica Studios made a special section that tells the mystery.
2. Faye (Laufey)
Players who have played God of War (2018) will definitely wonder who Faye (Laufey) is? It is said that Faye is the only woman of Giant descent who married Kratos in Norse Mythology. However, she only appears at the beginning and is said to have died and her body was cremated to be taken to Jotunheim.
There are many unanswered questions about Faye, ranging from how she looks, her powers, how she met Kratos, to how she was able to predict Kratos and Atreus' journey to Jotunheim before they died.
In addition, the Giant race is almost extinct, only Atreus and Jormungandr (The World Serpent) are left. The question is, how was the life of the Giant race before extinction and what was the reason for the gods of Norse Mythology to kill the Giant race? This is still a mystery.
3. Kratos’ Death Prophecy
Many question Kratos and Atreus’ journey in Jotunheim because they saw the murals there. On the walls are murals of events from their past, present, and future. In the last mural, there is a prophecy that describes the terrible death of Kratos. The wall mural depicts Kratos lying on Atreus' lap, with a snake-like entity oozing out of his mouth. As a result, many speculated with various answers that did not look good for Kratos.
Many predict that the mural is hinting that Atreus will kill his father, Kratos. There are also those who predict that the mural depicts Kratos' death due to Atreus' fault, or the result of a major battle between Kratos and his son. Of course, this is still a mystery and maybe revealed through the next God of War series.
4. Hraesvelg at Helheim
Hraesvelg is a Jotunn (giant frost) that has the shape of an eagle. This monster first appeared when Kratos went to Helheim to take the heart from the Bridge Keeper to treat Atreus. But who is the giant bird and why is it there?
Quoting the Norse Mythology, it’s stated that Hraesvelg is dubbed as a scavenger that perched facing Helheim. This giant bird is also believed to be a harbinger of the coming of Ragnarok, where he will flap his wings when the event occurs.
5. Apollo’s Fate
Apollo is one of the gods of Olympus who is always mentioned by name but never appears directly in God of War. Even Kratos used Apollo's bow and arrow weapons in the God of War 3 to fight Zeus and other gods. It is known that Kratos massacred the gods of Olympus, but it is not seen that Kratos ever came face to face with or killed Apollo. So Apollo’s fate remains a mystery. Is he still alive or dead along with the destruction of Olympus?

6. Olympus’s Post God of War 3
After Kratos' adventures in Greek Mythology, surely many are wondering about Olympus’ fate after the massacre of the gods. It is still a mystery whether Olympus has become a peaceful region or has become chaotic after all its gods have been killed by Kratos. Well, hopefully this mystery can be revealed in the next God of War series.
7. Origin of Dragons in God of War
In God of War (2018), Kratos is in a new world. Where the world also presents several versions of the dragon, with five dragons already shown. Such as; Hraezlyr who attacks Kratos and Atreus, Dagsetr is Baldur's dragon mount, and the other three dwarf dragons are Fafnir, Reginn, and Otr.
Although it provides an interesting scene in the game, it seems that Santa Monica Studios has not explained the origin of the dragons. So the question is, were the dragons dwarves at one point? If so, why did Hraezlyr attack Sindri? And what exactly happened to the dragons is still a mystery.
8. Kratos’ Other Weapon
In God of War 3, during the fight against Zeus, it was shown that most of Kratos' weapons had been destroyed. Until God of War (2018) came out, one of Kratos' weapons that is still stored is the Blade of Chaos. It is also still a mystery, where are all the weapons that Kratos has used in the previous three God of War games? Is it possible that all of Kratos’ weapons are destroyed and only the Blades of Chaos are left?
9. The Existence of Other Mythological Gods
While in Jotunheim, Kratos sees a mural showing the existence of other mythological gods left behind by Tyr. At each end of the mural, there are several symbols that represent certain regions, such as Egypt, Japan, and China. This Easter egg certainly invites a lot of speculation that Santa Monica will develop the God of War story to other Mythologies as shown on the mural.
10. Kratos’ Reputation
Kratos has been in two Mythologies, Greek and Norse Mythology. While in Norse Mythology, many gods had anticipated Kratos' appearance. So if the gods from the two Mythologies know Kratos, do the gods from other Mythologies also know Kratos?
If the worlds in God of War were interconnected, it was possible that Kratos' reputation was already known to the gods from other Mythologies. But this is still a mystery that has not been answered until now.
