Netflix announced via Twitter on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, that a live-action series based on Yoshihiro Togashi's YuYu Hakusho will be released in December 2023. The YuYu Hakusho live-action will be streamed by Netflix simultaneously worldwide.
Netflix's director of content acquisition, Kazutaka Sakamoto, is the YuYu Hakusho live-action executive producer. Akira Morii (Wild 7, Brave Heart Umizaru) is producing at Robot studio.
Sakamoto stated that he had been following the manga since childhood, and he still vividly remembers the joy of enjoying the story. He added that YuYu Hakusho has many fans all over the world. He said that Netflix is gathering a team of top talent from Japan and other countries for this YuYu Hakusho live-action project.
YuYu Hakusho tells the story of a 14-year-old boy named Yusuke Urameshi, who dies after saving a child in a car accident. The Spirit World is shocked by his death and offers him the opportunity to become a "spirit detective" tasked with defeating demons.
TOHO Studios and Netflix signed a contract to lease two of TOHO's stage facilities in Tokyo starting April 1, 2021. Netflix's first production there is the YuYu Hakusho live-action series.
Netflix rented out two of TOHO Studios' 10 sound stages, Stage 7 and Stage 10, as well as two acting centers and production centers, for this project.
Togashi (Hunter x Hunter) published the YuYu Hakusho manga from 1990 to 1994. Viz Media began publishing the manga in the English edition of Shonen Jump in 2002 and has also released 19 volumes of the manga.
An anime adaptation of YuYu Hakusho was aired from 1992 to 1995 and inspired two films and two Original Video Animations (OVAs). The manga also inspired a stage play that was shown in Japan from August to September 2019.
