Which one of you has played or watched the horror game Man of Medan? The interactive horror game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco becomes the talk of Indonesian gamer. The horror game Man of Medan adapted an urban legend from Indonesia, to be more accurate the mystery of the SS Ourang Medan from Medan, North Sumatra. If you haven’t heard about the mystery of the SS Ourang Medan, check the urban legend below

The Story of the Ghost Ship SS. Ourang Medan

Man of Medan is a game based on the story of the Dutch merchant ship, SS. Ourang Medan, in 1947.  The vessel was declared sinking in the middle of the ocean, leaving questionable mysteries behind.

Some say that the vessel sunk near the Malaka Strait, but other sources said that the vessel sunk in Marshall island in 1948.

The Events Before SS. Ourang Medan Sinks

The story of SS. Ourang Medan begins after two American ships that sailed near the Malaka Strait, the City of Baltimore, and Silver Star. Both of these ships unexpectedly received an emergency message from a radio or commonly known as “SOS.” The message is divided into two parts and separated by undecipherable morse code.

The morse code comes from the radio of SS. Ourang Medan reporting the horrible death of its captain and all of its crews. This is the message being transmitted:

“All officers including captain are dead lying in chart-room and bridge. Possibly whole crew dead………………………….. I die….”

After receiving the messages, the captain of Silver Star immediately comes to the location of SS. Ourang Medan since his ship is the closest. The crews of the Silver Star used the binocular to check SS. Ourang Medan as they are nearing the location.

When they reached the location, the crews of Silver Star started shouting to hear if there are any signs of life, although it seems like there are no signs of life on SS. Ourang Medan. Because there’s no response, the crews of Silver Star tried to make a radio contact – including sounding the ship’s horn. But unfortunately, all of their attempts to make contact failed.

Then the crews decided to board SS. Ourang Medan and they saw the stiff corpses of SS. Ourang Medan crews.

The eyes of every corpse are wide open as if they died in fear! Hoping that there is a survivor, the rescue team decided to explore the vessel, and when they reached the boiler room, the crews of Silver Star felt cold in a 43 degree Celsius boiler room.

When the rescue team failed to see any signs of life, they decided to pull SS. Ourang Medan by using mining ropes tied to both ships while sailing to the nearest port.

Ourang Medan Sinks

Right before Silver Star sails, something unexpected happened to SS. Ourang Medan.  All of a sudden, a cloud of smoke, along with fire, appears from the ship’s cargo.

This sudden happening surprises the rescue team from the Silver Star, and they start running around and jumps out of the ship to the ocean. Luckily they manage to cut the rope that tied the two boats together, and the Silver Star vessel and its crews can distance themselves from SS. Ourang Medan.

Not too long after that, SS. Ourang Medan exploded, but fortunately, all of the crews of the Silver Star vessel survived.  The explosion happened right in front of them – followed by a massive fire.

Ourang Medan sinks in the Malaka Strait along with the explosion.

Considered as a Hoax

The sinking incident of SS. Ourang Medan is still a mystery to this day – even considered as a hoax. The lack of data and information about this incident can’t be found on  Lloyd's Shipping Register (an international maritime association) made people think this incident is a hoax.

There’s no data or information about when and where SS. Ourang Medan is built. So it’s not weird that people think this incident is a hoax so the story of this incident is remembered as an urban legend.

That’s the story of SS. Ourang Medan, a ghost ship from Indonesia that inspires the horror game Man of Medan. Do you believe the story?
