There’s a quite unique secret behind Roronoa Zoro’s powerful attack moves. Zoro is known as one of the Monster Trio of the Straw Hat Pirates. His cool fighting style always leaves us in awe, especially against powerful opponents. Each slash and move looks amusing.

After the Timeskip, Zoro is yet to have a serious battle. As proof, he managed to defeat Pica without a scratch whatsoever. Not just that, his left eye which always been covered is also still a mystery. He has mastered numerous moves, plus, Zoro is under the tutelage of the strongest swordsman in the world today, Dracule Mihawk.

Zoro has learned a lot of new moves, both those that have been combined with Haki or the original technique of Santoryu he mastered before. One of the high-level techniques shown by Zoro is when he cut Surume underwater. Did you know that there are actually rather unique facts behind Zoro’s techniques?

If you pay enough attention, there are unique similarities from Zoro’s moves. Not their powers, but their names. Most of the names of Zoro’s moves derived from food names. For example, “Santoryu Onigiri”. Onigiri means Japanese rice ball.

In an SBS One Piece column, volume 44, a fan asked, "Hello Oda-chi, I just recently noticed something when reading Zoro and Kaku’s fight in volume 43, there is a pattern to his attack names. First, nigiri. Nigiri means hand-rolled sushi. Then his other ones called toro, does it refer to tuna?

The same with o toro, does o toro refer to fatty tuna? And then there’s also hirameki, does this hirameki refer to hirame/flounder? Lastly, samon, does this samon means salmon? Seems like Zoro is really fixated on sushi, Could he have never had sushi before?"

In a playful tone, Oda replied, "Whoa whoa whoa, I think someone just accused you of some totally bogus crimes, Zoro-san". As if having the whole conversation with Zoro, Oda wrote, "Zoro, tell them it ain’t so, how would an author such myself show such puns in poor taste". as Zoro seemed unable to give a proper answer.

From that discussion with a fan, it can be concluded that Oda did name Zoro’s moves using food names. Perhaps Oda was just having a hard time naming all the moves in One Piece so then he just decided to take the names from foods. As well as Sanji’s moves, whose names might derive from French or Italian cuisines.

That was a unique fact behind the various names of Roronoa Zoro’s moves. Quite surprising, isn’t it? If you find this fascinating, feel free to share it with your pals. And wait for another One Piece discussion on DuniaGames!
