Nintendo revealed the cast, staff, and release date of Nintendo's Super Mario Bros animated film during Nintendo Direct's streaming on Thursday, September 23, 2021. Notable stars in the Super Mario Bros. film include Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi, Anna Taylor-Joy will play Princess Peach, and  Jack Black will voice Bowser.

Other cast members include Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

The Super Mario Bros film will be released on December 21, 2022. Universal Pictures will distribute the film. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directed the film, with a script written by Matthew Fogel.

Illumination founder Chris Meledandri told Variety in November 2018 that the Super Mario Bros. film was in "priority development" for a possible release in theaters in 2022.

Meledandri co-produced the film with the creators of Super Mario Bros. Shigeru Miyamoto. Meledandri stated that Miyamoto was the "frontman and center in the making of this film" and noted that the "original creator" is often absent from Hollywood film adaptations, but not in Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo had previously announced in February 2018 that Universal Studios subsidiary Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me, Minions, Sing) had begun planning the Super Mario Bros. animated  film. Both Nintendo and Universal Pictures funded the project, and Universal Pictures will distribute the film worldwide.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said in an interview with Asahi Shimbun in May 2016 that Nintendo was in talks with a production company to make a film based on its video game.

Buzzfeed reported in 2014 that Nintendo was in talks with Sony Pictures for the film rights to the Super Mario Bros. franchise. The Producer of Ghost in the Shell live-action film Avi Arad has been linked with the production process.

Nintendo has collaborated with Universal Studios to produce Nintendo rides for Universal Studios Japan, Universal Orlando Resort, and Universal Studios Hollywood theme parks. Universal Studios Japan Osaka began construction of the "Super Nintendo World" rides in June 2017.

Fyi, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel directed the 1993 Super Mario Bros. live-action film, starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper.
