Indonesia has lost one of its finest actors. Ray Sahetapy, a veteran actor widely recognized for his iconic roles on television and the big screen, passed away on Tuesday (April 1, 2025) at the age of 68. He breathed his last at RSPAD Gatot Subroto Hospital in Central Jakarta after battling multiple health complications since 2017.

Born in Donggala, Central Sulawesi, Ray Sahetapy had been a significant figure in Indonesian cinema since the 1980s. His name rose to prominence thanks to his captivating performances in numerous films, including The Raid. With his distinctive acting style and strong charisma, Ray established himself as one of Indonesia’s finest actors.

His talent was not confined to Indonesia alone—Ray Sahetapy had the opportunity to step onto the Hollywood stage. In 2016, he was involved in the production of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Captain America: Civil War. He played an auctioneer selling items belonging to the Winter Soldier in a scene featuring Baron Zemo. Unfortunately, the scene was ultimately cut from the final film. Nevertheless, his involvement in such a major project remains a proud achievement for the Indonesian film industry.

Battling Illness

Since 2017, Ray Sahetapy had been diagnosed with diabetes. His health condition worsened when he suffered a stroke in mid-2023. The stroke not only affected his physical abilities but also his memory. Reports indicated that he began experiencing difficulties in speaking and writing.

Throughout his life, Ray Sahetapy was known for his generosity and willingness to help others. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy in the film industry, serving as an inspiration for many young actors. His former wife, Dewi Yull, along with his children, expressed their deep sorrow over his passing.

Ray Sahetapy’s funeral will take place at Tanah Kusir Public Cemetery in South Jakarta on Friday (April 4, 2025). His departure is a profound loss for his family, colleagues, and devoted fans.
