[OPINION] The Reason Why Mihawk Faced Luffy at Marineford in One Piece!
Here are a few possibilities why Mihawk faced Luffy at Marineford!
Anime & Manga | 12 January
Marineford is one of the most interesting arcs in One Piece where we see many interesting battles from strong fighters who gathered in one place. One of the strongest fighters that appear in this arc is Dracule Mihawk who holds the title of the strongest swordsman in the world.
Mihawk once stood in Luffy's way and tried to kill him. Of the many pirates the Marines face there, why did Mihawk choose to fight Luffy? Is there any particular reason? In this article, Dunia Games wants to talk about it. Here are a few possible reasons why Mihawk stood in Luffy's way!
Before fighting Luffy, Mihawk had a chance to apologize to Shanks. He probably just wanted to know if Luffy's strong enough to earn Shanks' trust. Shanks sacrificed one of his arms for Luffy's safety and also gave him the straw hat that Roger used to wear.
Another possibility, Mihawk wanted to see Luffy's strength firsthand who managed to defeat strong fighters such as Crocodile, Luci, and Moria. Mihawk might not be surprised if Luffy managed to beat them in a one-on-one fight, but Crocodile has Baroque Works, Lucci has the Marines, and Moria has an army of zombies. Mihawk was curious as to how Luffy was able to get past the worst possible situation.

Since fighting against Zoro, Mihawk was immediately attracted to him, and this was because Zoro's dream is very big, which is to become the strongest swordsman in the world. Zoro didn't even mind dying against Mihawk. Mihawk wanted Zoro to grow stronger and return to fight against him someday.
This also makes Mihawk curious about what kind of people Zoro is following. What made him even more curious was when Shanks talked about him. Mihawk probably didn't intend to kill Luffy because if he died at the hands of Mihawk, then Luffy didn't deserve to be the Pirate King.
Mihawk also seems to want someone who can beat him or rather find an equal opponent since Shanks. He saw that in Zoro who followed Luffy. Mihawk used to be Shanks' rival, just like Roger and Shirohige, but Mihawk is no longer interested in fighting against Shanks after he had one arm left.
It might that one of the above possibilities was the reason why Mihawk faced Luffy at Marineford. At that time, Mihawk really wanted to kill Luffy. If Vista didn't come to help, Luffy might have been killed by him. Keep in mind that this is just an opinion so don't take it seriously.
