Every good hero has to be tested for courage at some point in the story and there are many examples in the anime where heroes have overcome their fears, no matter how scared they are, these heroes are finally able to overcome fear to finally show their power.

Sadly, not all anime heroes are built the same, and while some conquer their fears and survive to save themselves, others end up losing. So far there are some cowardly anime heroes who are actually really strong. Who are they? Here's the review!

1. Emma

Emma from The Promised Neverland is one hell of a character. She is one of the orphans at Grace Field House. Upon learning that they are all meant to be food for the devil, Emma is horrified but driven to save everyone from that fate.

Even though she was afraid, she still did the things he could. However, it is the fear of what could happen to her precious family that motivates her to fight for their escape and survival.

2. Zenitsu

The world of Demon Slayer is not for the faint of heart as in this anime or manga demons come out to feast on humans at sunset. It takes great skill and even greater courage to fight monsters like that, and then there's Zenitsu, who believes himself to be a demon slayer.

But unfortunately Zenitsu is a coward who often gets scared at various times when fighting demons. Luckily Zenitsu has a sleeping habit that allows him to bring out his best.

3. Kobeni

The life expectancy of a devil hunter in Chainsaw Man is extremely low, as the job is fraught with deadly threats, and even the most skilled demon hunters cut their lifespan by forming contracts with powerful demons. So it's understandable that people like Kobeni are always scared to death.

Pushed into the life of a demon hunter for the sake of her family, Kobeni's fear of death is so strong that she nearly sacrifices Denji at one point in hopes of escape. However, surprisingly enough, Kobeni is quite agile and strong.

4. Shinji

In a world under threat from giant monstrous creatures called Angels, courage may wane, especially when the task of fighting them falls to someone as young as Shinji of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Unlike others who were trained to pilot Evas, Shinji lacked experience.

Fighting Angels isn't the only fear that rules Shinji's life, as he is also wracked by fears of his own incompetence, abandonment, and even his own father. Many of Shinji's stories are about dealing with his insecurities, and his fears are a big part of that.

5. Fushi

To Your Eternity's Fushi isn't afraid of his own death because his life can't end, but the same can't be said for those around him. During Fushi's long lifetime, he had watched countless precious friends come into his life and pass away, scaring him.

In a way, it made Fushi have a deep respect for life where he refuses to kill because of it.

6. Usopp

When one thinks of cowardly anime characters who are actually strong, one of the first that comes to mind is the Straw Hat crew's sniper, Usopp. To be honest, the world of One Piece is filled with deadly monsters, islands, and even humans, so it's not like Usopp's fears are unfounded.

At times, concocting illness to keep from setting foot on the island or simply being afraid to face danger, Usopp's cowardice is constantly put to the test. However, the funny thing is, his over-the-top behavior and negative personality have actually been the driving force for him to take action.

7. Mob

Some are afraid because they feel powerless to do anything, while others are afraid because they know that they have great power. As for Mob from Mob Psycho 100, he is afraid because he has tremendous power. Mob refuses to use his powers, especially on other people, unless he is forced to.

As well as knowing how dangerous his powers can be, Mob can also be socially awkward and freeze up in tense situations. For Mob, his powers don't make him special or above other normal people.
