Grinding Gear Games has officially announced the latest major update for Path of Exile 2 through a livestream titled The Third Edict. Game Director Jonathan Rogers introduced a wide range of new content, including Act 4, Interlude, a brand-new league, and the first-ever Free Weekend.

Act 4: Adventure in the Karui Archipelago

The story of Path of Exile 2 continues in Act 4, which takes players to the Karui Archipelago. Here, players can explore eight islands in a non-linear path, freely choosing which areas to conquer first. Act 4 introduces more than 100 new monster types, 16 areas, 12 bosses, and a variety of unique encounters.

Interlude Leading to the Endgame

In addition to Act 4, GGG also unveiled three Interlude Acts that serve as a bridge to the endgame. These interludes allow players to progress up to level 65 without repeating the campaign. Some of the stories include returning to Ogham Village to face a mysterious darkness in Holten, as well as assisting Asala in performing the Gifting of Water ritual in the Vastiri Desert.

New League: Rise of the Abyssal

As is tradition with Path of Exile, the update also introduces a brand-new league titled Rise of the Abyssal. Players will encounter exclusive rewards, crafting systems, areas, and bosses available only within this league.

Major Changes to Characters and Items

Jonathan also announced a massive overhaul to the support gem system, along with new skills and various buffs for characters. On top of that, significant updates are coming to crafting, items, and the trade system, all of which are expected to bring a fresh experience to the endgame.

First Free Weekend

Another exciting highlight is the game’s first Free Weekend, launching alongside The Third Edict on August 29, 2025. For the first time, players can try out the game without needing an Early Access key. The Free Weekend will run until September 1, 2025.

With the arrival of Act 4, Interludes, and sweeping gameplay changes, Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated updates for the community. Grinding Gear Games also promised more detailed patch notes leading up to its release.
